Extremely high nutrient loads have been reported in grazed grassland regimes compared with cutting regimes in some dairy systems that include the use of supplemental feeding. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate the effects on productivity and behaviour of high-yielding dairy cows with limited access to indoor feed and restriction in the time at pasture in a continuous stocking system. During a 6-week period from the start of the grazing season 2005, an experiment was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of restrictive indoor feeding combined with limiting the time at pasture on the productivity and behaviour of high-yielding dairy cows (31.0^5.4 kg energy-corrected milk) in a system based on continuous stocking. The herd was split into three groups allocated to three treatments consisting of 4, 6.5 and 9 h at pasture, respectively. Each group of cows grazed in separate paddocks with three replicates and was separately housed in a cubicle system with slatted floor during the rest of the day. All cows were fed the same amount of supplement, adjusted daily to meet the ad libitum indoor intake of the cows at pasture for nine hours. The herbage allowance was 1650 kg dry matter (DM) per ha, and the intake of supplemental feed was 9.1 kg DM per cow daily. The limitation of the time at pasture to 4 h in combination with restrictive indoor feeding reduced the daily milk, fat and protein yield and live weight compared with 9 h of access to pasture. The proportion of time during which the cows were grazing while at pasture increased from 0.64 to 0.86 and the estimated herbage intake per h at pasture decreased from 2547 g DM to1398 g DM, when time at pasture changed from 4 to 9 h. It can be concluded, that in systems with a high herbage allowance, the cow was able to compensate for 0.8 of the reduction in time at pasture by increasing the proportion of time spent grazing and presumably also both the bite rate and mass, although the latter two have not been directly confirmed in the present study.

RESUMO -Estudou-se o comportamento alimentar de vacas da raça Holandesa em lactação mantidas em pastagem de misturas de espécies de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.), azevém (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) e outras de crescimento espontâneo. Como diferencial destas pastagens, introduziu-se trevo-branco (Trifolium repens L.) ou amendoim forrageiro (Arachis pintoi Krapov. & Greg.). Nos meses de julho, agosto e outubro de 2005, foram feitas avaliações em pastejo utilizando-se em cada uma seis vacas entre o segundo e o quinto mês de lactação, observadas nos períodos de 18 às 6 h e de 8 às 16 h, a cada 10 minutos, por dois observadores. Foram observados o tempo de pastejo nas linhas constituídas por capim-elefante (CE), o tempo de pastejo nas espécies estabelecidas na entrelinha e os tempos de pastejo total (pastejo de CE + entrelinha), ruminação e ócio. Também foram avaliados a massa de forragem inicial, o valor nutritivo da forragem ingerida e as condições climáticas do período. O tempo médio de pastejo na entrelinha foi de 4 horas e 9 minutos para o trevo-branco e de 3 horas e 6 minutos para o amendoim forrageiro. O tempo médio de pastejo do capim-elefante não diferiu entre as misturas com trevo-branco (4 horas e 27 minutos) e com amendoim forrageiro (5 horas e 51 minutos), assim como os tempos de ruminação e ócio, que também não diferiram entre as espécies associadas. A presença de forrageiras de inverno está associada ao maior tempo de consumo de forragem. ResumoAvaliou-se o efeito dos aditivos a base de própolis e monensina sódica sobre o comportamento ingestivo (pastejo -PAS, ruminação deitado -RDE, ruminação em pé -RPE, ruminação -RU, ócio deitado -ODE, ócio em pé -OPE, ócio -OC, andando -AND, postura em pé -PE, postura deitado -DE e consumo de suplemento e água -CSA) de novilhas em pastejo de capim Tifton 85. Os tratamentos avaliados foram: ausência de aditivo (AAD); própolis -PRO (33,24 mg animal -1 de flavonóides totais em apigenina); e monensina sódica -MON (100 mg animal -1 ). Foram utilizadas cinco novilhas tratamento -1 para o ensaio do comportamento ingestivo durante 12 horas de avaliação total por dia, o qual foi dividido em três períodos de avaliação. Foi utilizado um delineamento em fatorial 3 x 3 para avaliação do comportamento ingestivo em função dos períodos de avaliação. Foram utilizados três piquetes de 2,9 hectares de capim Tifton 85. Os aditivos e o suplemento mineral (50 g animal -1 ) foram veiculados juntamente com 200 g de grão de milho moído fornecido às 17 horas. Para todas as atividades dos comportamentos ingestivo foram observados o efeito de período sobre os tempos despendidos nas diferentes atividades. As atividades de PAS e CSA foram maiores no terceiro período avaliado (15horas às 19horas) em relação ao primeiro período (7horas às 11horas). Para a atividade OC e DE, foi observado maior tempo expresso em minutos para as novilhas do tratamento com PRO no período das 7horas às 11horas, em relação aos demais tratamentos (AAD e MON). Desta maneira, conclui-se que a utilização de aditivo a base de própolis possibilita a substituição a monensina sódica para novilhas mantidas a pasto sem alterar o comportamento ingestivo além de propiciar maior período ócio durante o dia sem alterar o desempenho animal.
