Masticatory function in temporomandibular dysfunction patients: electromyographic evaluation

Abstract: emporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) is a complex disturbance that involves the masticatory muscles and/or temporomandibular joint, causing damage to the masticatory function. This study evaluated the electromyographic activity of the masseter muscle during habitual mastication of bread, apple, banana, cashew nut and paraffin film (Parafilm M) in 25 adult subjects, of both gender, with TMD. The results were compared to those of a control group, composed of 15 adult subjects, of both sexes, free of signs and/or s… Show more

“…8,9 Thus, clinical examination directly focusing on orofacial myofunctional conditions is important in TMD studies. 9 Functional disorders of the stomatognathic system may occur in children 1,10 but are infrequently diagnosed and may consequently result in TMD.…”

“…Some other studies describe chewing time, however they use other foods such as "water and salt" biscuit, banana and apple [19,17,14]. However, few studies investigate the duration of chewing with foods of different textures in adult subjects, most of them being carried out with children or elderly people, making it difficult to compare the discussion of the results observed in our study [18,19,20].…”

“…Other researchers, also speech therapists, [14] evaluated the chewing of adult subjects with and without temporomandibular dysfunction. They used French bread, apple, banana and cashew nuts and observed that the more rigid the food, the longer the chewing time for each act and cycle.…”

“…A eletromiografia (EMG) pode fornecer informações sobre o comportamento dos músculos mastigatórios e a funcionalidade do sistema estomatognático, porque capta e registra a atividade muscular (Berretin-Felix et al, 2005). Por meio da EMG é possível medir os potencias dos músculos mastigatórios durante atividades dinâmica (mastigação) e estática (isometria, repouso e apertamento dentário).…”
