Mapping uncertainty from multi-criteria analysis of land development suitability, the case of Howth, Dublin

Abstract: This paper presents a method for determining and mapping suitable locations for development using Multi Criteria Analysis and the Analytical Hierarchy Process and considering uncertainties in the process. The method is applied to the case study of Howth (Dublin), where development suitability is assessed against specific protection and conservation areas as well as ground water vulnerability. Uncertainty is incorporated using a Monte Carlo simulation into the Analytical Hierarchy Process calculations to determ… Show more

“…This should particularly apply to land use management and planning, which has been widely discussed in [2]. The authors of [3] have discussed the problem of uncertainty mapping using Monte Carlo analysis plugged into the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, using the case of Howth, Dublin, in this context. However, this approach primarily focused on allowing decision-makers to gain insight into how much expert opinions can be trusted, specifically focusing on the AHP method, which can be considered a limitation.…”

“…In view of the complexity and uncertainty of an urban environment, how to identify the suitable evaluation index weight is a critical step for the UGS suitability evaluation. A number of recent papers have discussed the limitations of the AHP method in dealing with the complexity and uncertainty of the evaluation indicators and proposed a fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to process uncertain and inaccurate problems [28][29][30][31]. However, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method has also been criticized for its inefficiency in decision-making [32].…”

“…Most of the published works (e.g. Yang et al, 2008;or Quinn, Schiel, & Caruso, 2014) address this multi-criteria analysis through an analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Many papers focus on improvements in the AHP method (e.g.…”

“…An additional benefit of this paper is the visualization aspect; only a limited number of published papers have focused on the visualization of land suitability (e.g. Quinn et al, 2014;Rellini, Pavarino, Scopesi, & Zotti, 2011;Stanchi et al, 2013). Well-designed maps can provide a more detailed and accurate background for decision making.…”
