Mapping Memory Routes

Abstract: This demonstration offers the opportunity to explore a multisensory digital interface as part of the wider research project 'Mapping Memory Routes: Eliciting Culturally Diverse Memes for Digital Archives'. The interface is conceived as a tool for capturing memes rooted in the rich intangible heritage of culturally diverse communities in London, opening up a space for intercultural exchange to be used in meaningful urban design. Based on a model developed by artist and researcher Alda Terracciano for her multis… Show more

“…This issue, as Aiche (2006) assert, becomes destabilizing for a whole generation that identifies its roots with a heritage representing otherness. Beyond the artistic or economic value of cultural goods (Palaiologou & Griffiths, 2019;Terracciano et al, 2017), the notion of identity is fundamentally linked to heritage and its translation into the symbolic urban image (Kagan, 2022;Low et al, 2005;Phetsuriya & Heath, 2021). The recognition of a legacy as heritage that does not carry values recognized by all as determining its own identity can be an insurmountable compromise for some ideologies (Kaufmann, 2009;Obad Šćitaroci et al, 2019).…”

“…Public participation plays an essential role in urban design regarding decision-making and community acceptance of a proposed intervention in the urban environment [15]. In the past five years, many authors have focused on building a bridge between the participatory and design processes through virtual visualization [10,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23]. In response to this demand for digital participation in the making of cities, the use of digital tools and online platforms have become popular [24,25].…”

“…Another similar application is proposed by Terracciano [18], based on AR technology that allows the user to experience a street in seven minutes. This application could reproduce the actual context of the area by reading the map, certain symbols, and other detailed information from the site such as images and videos containing storytelling features [19,23].…”
