Mandibular Fractures in the Cat A Retrospective Study

Abstract: A retrospective study was made of 75 mandibular fractures in 62 cats. Mandibular fractures comprised 14.5% of all fractures seen in 517 cats. Automobile trauma was the cause of injury in more than 50% of the cases. The mean age of patients was 29.5 months. Symphyseal fractures were most common (73.3%), followed by fractures of the body (16%), condyle (6.7%), and coronoid process (4%). Sixty-seven percent of the fractures were stabilized. Cerclage and interfragmentary wiring were the most common forms of fixati… Show more

“…Aust Vet J 2003;81:671-673 F ractures of the mandible and maxilla are very common in cats and dogs, with fractures of the mandible alone making up 3 to 6% of all fractures in canines. [1][2][3] Mandibular and maxillary fractures cause a number of functional problems in both dogs and cats, and surgical repair is usually required to restore function and cosmetic appearance. The main purpose of the repair should be to prevent damage to soft tissue and dental structures, to provide ideal anatomical reduction 4 and, when a rigid fixation is being performed, to protect occlusive alignment.…”

“…In human patients, titanium miniscrews can cause damage to the inferior alveolar nerve, which in most cases results in transient paresthesia or dysesthesia. 33,36 Given that, in cats, mandible body fractures are frequently the result of automobile trauma, 3 damage to the neurovascular bundle within the mandibular canal is highly likely. Therefore, presurgical planning involving dental radiography and CT can facilitate visualization of the fracture and anatomic configuration (ie, location of tooth roots and mandibular canal) of the mandible to help surgeons determine the optimal location for internal fixation placement.…”

“…It has been reported that healing that will allow cerclage wire removal in mandibular symphysis fractures is achieved in 4-6 weeks [16][17][18][19] . In the present study, this duration was determined to be 3 weeks.…”
