Management strategies of saline water on morphometric characteristics of melon cultivars

Abstract: It was to aimed it to investigate effects of various saline water use strategies on melon production and quality of two cultivars (Cucumis melo L., Sancho -C 1 and Medellín -C 2 . The plants were irrigated with water of low (S 1 = 0.61 dS m -1 ) and high (S 2 = 4.78 dS m -1 ) salinity levels, during each crop stage: S 1 S 1 S 2 S 2 -T 1 ; S 2 S 1 S 2 S 2 -T 2 ; S 2 S 2 S 1 S 2 -T 3 . The 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th terms of these sequences correspond to initial growth, flowering, fruit ripening and h… Show more

“…In the fruit-producing region of Rio Grande do Norte, a semiarid region of Brazil, some of the water used for irrigation comes from deep artesian wells. Although it is a source of good quality water, high pumping costs make it economically prohibitive for agricultural use (SOUSA et al, 2009;MEDEIROS et al, 2014). Alternatively, irrigated water can be pumped at low costs from shallow wells in the Jandaíra limestone sediment, located on the north shore of the Rio Grande do Norte State and on the northeast of the Ceará State (VASCONCELOS; TEIXEIRA; ALVES NETO, 2010); however, it is considered brackish water and possesses a high salt concentration.…”

“…Salinity is one of the most important environmental problems that affect the growth and productivity of various crops (Bhaskar and Bingru, 2014). Several studies indicated that crops sensitivity tolerance to water salinity effects may vary among species and cultivars, depending on the regional climatic conditions, soil types, irrigation methods and plant development stage (Dias et al, 2011;Nangare et al, 2013;Medeiros et al, 2014). The negative impact of salinity increases dramatically in arid and semi-arid regions of the world where the majority of developing countries are located (Khan et al, 1999).…”
