Malvidin Protects against and Repairs Peptic Ulcers in Mice by Alleviating Oxidative Stress and Inflammation

Abstract: Peptic ulcer episodes cause damage to the stomach and intestine, with inflammatory cell infiltration and oxidative stress as the main players. In this study, we investigated the potential of anthocyanidin malvidin for preventive and curative peptic ulcer treatment. The anthocyanidin effects were examined in gastric ulcer mouse models induced by ethanol, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ischemia-reperfusion (IR), acetic acid and duodenal ulcer induced by polypharmacy. Expression levels of oxidati… Show more

“…A major bottleneck of drug discovery on leishmaniasis was aimed at the in-silico workflow proposed, which is that compounds must show activity in the acidic environment of the phagolysosome [60]; thus, Malvidin showed stable receptor-ligand interaction and favorable binding free energy at pH 2 in MDS analysis. Also, the Target Product Profile (TPP) proposed by the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), includes regard for the oral route of administration for new candidates [61], while the ADME profile of the compound shows its potential for oral route administration and high bioavailability [62][63][64]. Furthermore, Malvidin has shown the potential to be an antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, antiinflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-osteoarthritis, anti-proliferative, and anticancer drug candidate [65][66][67][68][69].…”

“…Ethanol-induced gastric ulcer models are commonly used to evaluate the pathogenesis of gastric ulceration and investigate the gastroprotective effects of various drugs and natural products [ 40 ]. Previous studies have suggested that ethanol ingestion leads to gastric ulcers, which are significantly associated with increased oxidative stress and increases in the levels of free radicals derived from oxygen, leading to a reduction in antioxidant enzyme activity [ 41 ].…”

“…Black rice extract containing cyanidin 3-glucoside inhibited the biogenesis of virulence proteins in H. pylori and decreased apoptosis of H. pylori -infected cells [ 257 ]. Further, reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation may play a role in the reduction of peptic ulcers caused by ethanol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and increased healing of acetic-acid-induced ulcers by malvidin [ 258 ]. In DSS-induced IBD in rats, cyanidin 3-glucoside and extracts of Queen Garnet plums at 8 mg/kg/day effectively reversed gastrointestinal symptoms [ 259 ] to a similar extent as sulphasalazine (~350 mg/kg/day) [ 260 ].…”
