Male Breast Cancer: 37-Year Data Study at a Single Experience Center in Turkey

Abstract: PurposeThe aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of prognostic factors on the overall survival (OS) and locoregional control (LC) among male breast cancer (MBC) patients treated at Cerrahpasa Medical School Hospital, along with a review of the related literature.MethodsThe data of 86 patients treated for MBC from 1973 to 2010 are retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographics and clinical information, including the date of diagnosis, treatment, clinical course, and the date and causes of death are routi… Show more

“…Lymph node positive MBC carried a poor prognosis as compared to node negative MBC. (Giordano et al, 2004;Zygogianni et al, 2012;Selcukbiricik et al, 2013) In our study, the 5 year OS for lymph node negative and positive patients was 66.7% and 58.3% respectively. However, this result was not statistically significant (p=0.591).…”

“…However, in the multivariate analysis adjusted for tumor stage and lymph node status, the difference in OS was not significant. (Giordano et al, 2004;Sedighi et al, 2013;Selcukbiricik et al, 2013;Kaushik et al, 2014) In our population, 66.7% patients were ER positive and 46.7% were PR positive. All were treated with Tamoxifen.…”

“…In the majority of cases, distant recurrence was the most prevalent documented mainly in bone as in our study. Like FBC patients, visceral metastases, in lung or liver, have a poor prognosis when compared to bone (exclusively) .…”

“…The real impact of these changes in male patients survival and the need to evaluate this in recurrence time must be evaluated in large series, having in mind that these patients have luminal-like tumors predominantly. 3 In the majority of cases, distant recurrence was the most prevalent 20,21 documented mainly in bone 22,23 as in our study. Like FBC patients, visceral metastases, in lung or liver, have a poor prognosis when compared to bone (exclusively).…”

“…This is important in order to better understand the differences between overall survival and disease-free survival [1]. In these retrospective series, as shown in Table 2, it is sometimes seen that the 5-year disease-free survival rate is larger than the 5-year overall survival rate, for example in the studies by Cutuli et al (1995) [87] (74% vs. 65%), Donegan et al (1998) [10] (66% vs. 51%), Selcukbiricik et al (2013) [93] (72% vs. 66%) and Müller et al (2012) [159] (79% vs. 66%), which is due to the fact that some of the patients in these retrospective series, die during the follow-up period due to other primary cancers, or from other related diseases or from various complications and unknown causes [1]. "Disease-specific survival" is therefore a more suitable marker for studying the MBC prognosis, compared to "overall survival" [10] [163].…”
