Making sense of the collective intelligence field: A review

Abstract: The problem we want to solve is to find out what is new in the collective intelligence literature and how it is to be understood alongside other social science disciplines. The reason it is important is that collective intelligence and problems of collaboration seem familiar in the social sciences but do not necessarily fit into any of the established disciplines. Also, collective intelligence is often associated with the notion of wisdom of crowds, which demands scrutiny. We found that the collective intellig… Show more

“…And there are limits to the volume of collective reasoning processes that an individual can navigate. The number of collective intelligence, bio-inspired computing [4], [52], [53], [54], [55] and other computational solutions for group decision-making in existence today may already be unmanageably large in comparison to the ability of any one individual to understand and choose between all of them. Figure 11: The capacity of individuals in the group for information might be far less than the information available in the group.…”

“…There is no evidence to support the notion that such a strategy really has a positive impact on attaining the best solutions. So¨ilen (2019) lamented that his literature review revealed how the collaborative ideas of collective intelligence, though highly popular in social science literature, may not necessarily align with a specific industry, as discussed in various segments of the body of literature. The concept was applied to numerous interdisciplinary fields, with some creatively integrated into multiple technical domains, thereby further muddling the precise definition of collective intelligence.…”

“…Exhaustive reviews and bibliometric analysis about Competitive Intelligence have been performed (Leitzelman and Soulier 2009;Aguirre 2015;Du Toit 2015;Shujahat et al 2017;do Prado and de Campos 2018;Lopez-Robles et al 2018, 2019, 2020. However, the reviews conducted in the area of Economic Intelligence (Hardy 2011), Collective Intelligence (Søilen 2019) and Territorial Intelligence (Bertacchini 2010;Perea-Medina et al 2018) have not been carried out with the exhaustiveness and the purpose that the use of standard academic reviews methodologies like those suggested by PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) implies (Tricco et al 2018).…”
