Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is an essential feature of climate mitigation. With current techniques falling short in terms of performance, cost, and environmental integrity, novel CO 2 utilization has the potential to create a multi-billion dollar commodity market that is capable of sequestering large amounts of CO 2 from the atmosphere. To achieve this, significant development in terms of government funding, policy change, and research is needed. This review highlights the current state of novel CO 2 utilization technologies. The paper evaluates their future prospects by drawing parallels with two successfully developed hardware-heavy technologies of the last 50 years, namely the solar and the automobile industries. Both technologies have had radically different commercialization pathways, and offer important insights on facilitating and accelerating the development of novel CO 2 utilization technologies to meet critically relevant climate targets.

Automotive Radar has already found its way into nearly all car manufacturers portfolio, even for small car platforms. Over the decades, the performance requirements increased steadily from simple detector tasks in blind spot monitoring systems to multi range smart environment perception sensors. The utmost push in performance requirement is initiated with the trend towards highly automated driving. Future automotive radar systems have to provide imaging like capabilities and have to interact in radar networks, which allow for highly comprehensive perception tasks. The paper will provide an overview on state of the art automotive radar usage on the basis of the DAIMLER car platforms, will give an outline on future requirements for highly automated driving and will present recent approaches in radar based environmental perception.

Autonomous cars are currently widely studied in the automotive and robotics industries because autonomous driving can satisfy the needs of human drivers regarding safety, efficiency, and comfortable driving. Behavior and motion planning for an autonomous car is one of the main requirements of autonomous driving. For autonomous cars, a local route along with its road geometry and attributes of the area is required. There are two ways to obtain the local route: perception-based local route (PBLR) and precise map-based local route (MBLR) methods. First, this paper analyzes the characteristic of both the PBLR and MBLR inference methods. Then based on this analysis, this paper proposes a hybrid local route generation algorithm that chooses the best local route between the PBLR and MBLR options, according to the perceived performance and the precise map availability. To effectively create an expensive precise map, a mapping region classification algorithm is presented to selectively choose the mapping area, where the precise map must be constructed for the MBLR inference. The hybrid local route generation algorithm with the mapping region classification allows the area used for autonomous driving to be extended while reducing the cost due to the precise map. The advantages of the proposed algorithm were verified with experiments in real traffic conditions.INDEX TERMS Hybrid local route (HLR), perception-based local route (PBLR), precise map-based local route (MBLR), precise map region classification, autonomous cars.
