Novel Carbon Dioxide Utilization Technologies: A Means to an End

Abstract: Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is an essential feature of climate mitigation. With current techniques falling short in terms of performance, cost, and environmental integrity, novel CO 2 utilization has the potential to create a multi-billion dollar commodity market that is capable of sequestering large amounts of CO 2 from the atmosphere. To achieve this, significant development in terms of government funding, policy change, and research is needed. This review highlights the current state of novel CO 2 utilizat… Show more

“…today) and even jewellery (https://aetherdiamonds.com). In a more realistic realm, the science and technology of creating value out of C-containing waste-what is being called carbon upcycling (CU; [18])-is currently experiencing a considerable push because of its commercial prospects and its considerable marketing potential [19]. In particular, one-carbon biotechnology is indeed one of the frontiers of contemporary research and likely to deliver many marketable items from otherwise wasted precursors [20][21][22][23][24][25].…”

“…CDU is now being positioned towards market introduction, as observed previously in other technology elds. 14,15 A 2016 study described a roadmap to a trillion-dollar market, highlighting the opportunities and documenting that at the time, less than 200 entities were engaged in commercial endeavors for CO 2 utilization. 11,16 That number has since increased incrementally, and some technologies have now achieved a sufficient maturity level to be deployed to markets, such as the production of chemicals, CO 2 -cured concrete, and aggregates.…”

“…Heavy manufacturing industries face the challenge of finding sustainable technologies to reduce their carbon emissions. Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) are a broad set of technologies to help reduce CO 2 emissions, and CO 2 utilization is a promising driver to carbon capture and storage since the production and sale of CO 2 -derived products could provide an economic incentive to decarbonization and, particularly, increase the sustainability of agricultural production systems [31,32].…”

“…Technological innovations in both the current fossil fuel energy sources and the automobile industry offer opportunities in deploying novel CO 2 utilization at a meaningful scale to reduce carbon emissions [32,33]. However, these operations require high capital and high operating costs [34], are not fully sustainable, and cannot be deployed at large-scale [35,36].…”
