The Construction and demolition (C and D) waste generation is a critical issue for the construction industry, which negatively affects the economy, environment, and society. This study estimates the penalty-cost based on the produced C&D wastes in steel and concrete skeleton projects. Field survey and the BOQ data were collected from five concrete and four steel skeleton projects. The difference of materials used and wastes generated between concrete and steel skeleton projects were evaluated statistically (ANOVA and Welch and Brown-Forsythe). A financial analysis was implemented for estimating the penalty cost. The study outcomes demonstrate that the amount of waste that construction managers estimated is significantly lower than the actual amount generated. Furthermore, 0.055% of the total project cost of a penalty was estimated based on the waste produced at construction sites. In the end, the estimated penalty was validated by comparing it with the six recent completed projects. The penalty calculated in this study could save the project cost and reduce the C&D waste. As a result, imposing the estimated cost as a penalty would force construction managers to think thoroughly about the generated C&D waste problems. This study also has a novelty and will add to the body of knowledge by using penalty-cost quantification model to save project-cost of construction material-based-waste, and it can be further explored by adopting more quality data and engaging different construction materials.

Construction waste generation has been perceived as a crucial issue that has critical consequences on the project effectiveness and ecological effect of the construction industry. The key objective of the current research is to identify the root causes of material construction waste generation in Malaysia. A well-structured questionnaire was designed based on the 52 identified root causes of material waste generation. The developed questionnaire was distributed to 35 highly experienced in Malaysian construction industry experts. The collected data was analyzed by the use of mean score analysis. The top identified root causes are poor supervision during the construction stage, lack of efficient site management, last minute changes, cutting uneconomical sizes of materials, and constant design changes during the construction period. The initial findings will aid construction practitioners to focus on these root causes in order to reduce the material construction waste generation at construction sites.

Abstract-Waste has been recognized as a major problem in the construction industry and its effects on working efficiency as well on general economy of country. Waste generation results from numerous factors at different stages of construction projects. The main objective of this paper is to identify the most significant causes of waste in construction projects of Sindh. This study is based on questionnaire survey investigation. Total seventy-three (73) respondents having construction site experience, participated during data collection. The gathered data was assessed through statistical method with help of Average indexing (A.I) technique. Findings of analyzed questionnaires present that, unsuitable methods of material storage, worker's mistakes, poor management system at site, effect of sub surface ground conditions, excessive use of construction material, inexperienced constructor hire for construction project work, poor site layout, poor coordination among the construction stakeholders, improper planning schedule of project by the constructor and problem between main constructor and sub-constructor are major construction waste issues in Sindh region.
