Magnification and resolution of microlenses with different shapes

Abstract: In this reported work, three types of microlenses, the whole microsphere solid lens (W-SL), the melted microsphere solid lens (M-SL) and the microsphere solid lens semi-immersed in SU-8 resist (S-SL), have been fabricated from mircospheres with a diameter of 2.87 µm. Their imaging properties on the nanosphere arrays with diameters of 280-600 nm were experimentally studied. It was found that the shape of the microlens plays an important role in the imaging properties. The imaging resolution of the S-SL is the b… Show more

“…From these publications one can see that, in the case of relatively small magnifications 1.5 3 M = − , as those reported e.g. in [95,109,120,121,123,124,126,130,134,142], the solid immersion lens and the spherical particle produce very similar effects. On the contrary, in the range of magnification values 3 6 M = − the difference between a sphere and a SIL becomes pronounced, as reported e.g.…”

“…The light intensity increased to -times the initial one and was maintained in a certain area, which was stronger than the intensity of the simulation ( -times the initial one), as shown in Figure 6 a,b. The decay length of the actual experiments was 10.08 wavelengths, as shown in Figure 6 b, which was different from the homogeneous micropyramid whose appeared near the apex [ 23 , 28 , 37 , 49 ]. The focal distance f reached three-times the wavelengths, which means the position broke through the locality of the near-field, bringing convenience to the manipulation of microparticles (as shown in Table 5 ).…”

“…According to literature reports, the spatial shape of the microstructure plays an important role in the features of the PNJ [ 21 , 22 ]. Thus, microstructures with various spatial forms [ 23 ] (sphere [ 24 ], cylinder [ 25 ], ellipse [ 26 ], cone [ 27 ], pyramid [ 28 ], cuboid [ 29 ], etc.) have been actively investigated.…”
