Refractive index less than two: photonic nanojets yesterday, today and tomorrow [Invited]

Abstract: Materials with relatively small refractive indices (2 n <), such as glass, quartz, polymers, some ceramics, etc., are the basic materials in most optical components (lenses, optical fibres, etc.). In this review, we present some of the phenomena and possible applications arising from the interaction of light with particles with a refractive index less than 2. The vast majority of the physics involved can be described with the help of the exact, analytical solution of Maxwell's equations for spherical particles… Show more

“…The length l of the photonic hooks is also under the influence of n and j/m too. Figure 3 As to the traditional photonic jets, the ratios of the refractive indices between the dielectric particle to the surrounding medium (n/ns) should keep in the range of 1:1 to 2:1 [13], [22]. In the case of photonic hooks formed from the twin-ellipse microcylinder, the generation of the photonic hooks will be mainly affected by the n/ns, and slightly influenced by j/m.…”

“…This curved beam, with a laser and a light modulator, is easier to generate than an Airy beam [3]. The shape and field distribution of photonic hooks are depended on the geometry and refractive index of microparticle [10]- [13]. An asymmetric microparticle of which combining a wedge prism and a cuboid was used to generate the photonic hook.…”

“…Moreover, there is a focusing effect perpendicular to the direction of the microfiber due to the focusing effect in the near field. 44 See the supplementary material for the time evolution of THz radiation. Figure 3(d) shows the normalized integrated power for both orientations of microfibers, where curves are normalized to aperture only [black curves in Fig.…”

“…For instance, incorporation of high-index microsphere into flexible elastomers was reported to improve its durability and reusability for observations at a specific position [16,17]. Microsphere was coupled with a confocal microscope to improve the maximal resolvability to sub-50nm scale [18,19,20]. Furthermore, micro-lens nanoscopes in extraordinary forms were also demonstrated, such as nanoparticle-based metamaterial hemisphere superlens leading to white-lighting 45 nm resolution [21], and biological superlens using spider silks and cells [22,23].…”
