Adsorption of 4-n-nonylphenol (4-n-NP) and bisphenol A (BPA) on magnetic reduced graphene oxides (rGOs) as a function of contact time, pH, ionic strength and humic acid were investigated by batch techniques. Adsorption of 4-n-NP and BPA were independent of pH at 3.0- 8.0, whereas the slightly decreased adsorption was observed at pH 8.0-11.0. Adsorption kinetics and isotherms of 4-n-NP and BPA on magnetic rGOs can be satisfactorily fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities of magnetic rGOs at pH 6.5 and 293 K were 63.96 and 48.74 mg/g for 4-n-NP and BPA, respectively, which were significantly higher than that of activated carbon. Based on theoretical calculations, the higher adsorption energy of rGOs + 4-n-NP was mainly due to π-π stacking and flexible long alkyl chain of 4-n-NP, whereas adsorption of BPA on rGOs was energetically favored by a lying-down configuration due to π-π stacking and dispersion forces, which was further demonstrated by FTIR analysis. These findings indicate that magnetic rGOs is a promising adsorbent for the efficient elimination of 4-n-NP/BPA from aqueous solutions due to its excellent adsorption performance and simple magnetic separation, which are of great significance for the remediation of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in environmental cleanup.

Summary For ultratight shale reservoirs, wettability strongly affects fluid flow behavior. However, wettability can be modified by numerous complex interactions and the ambient environment, such as pH, temperature, or surfactant access. This paper is a third-phase study of the use of surfactant imbibition to increase oil recovery from Bakken shale. The surfactant formulations that we used in this paper are the initial results that are based on our previous study, in which a group of surfactant formulations was examined—balancing the temperature, pH, salinity, and divalent-cation content of aqueous fluids to increase oil production from shale with ultralow porosity and permeability in the Middle Member of the Bakken formation in the Williston basin of North Dakota. In our previous study, through the use of spontaneous imbibition, brines and surfactant solutions with different water compositions were examined. With oil from the Bakken formation, significant differences in recoveries were observed, depending on compositions and conditions. Cases were observed in which brine and surfactant (0.05 to 0.2 wt% concentration) imbibition yielded recovery values of 1.55 to 76% original oil in place (OOIP) at high salinity (150 to 300 g/L; 15 to 30 wt%) and temperatures ranging from 23 to 120°C. To advance this work, this paper determines the wettability of different parts of the Bakken formation. One goal of this research is to identify whether the wettability can be altered by means of surfactant formulations. The ultimate objective of this research is to determine the potential of surfactant formulations to imbibe into and displace oil from shale and to examine the viability of a field application. In this paper, through the use of modified Amott-Harvey tests, the wettability was determined for cores and slices from three wells at different portions of the Bakken formation. The tests were performed under reservoir conditions (90 to 120°C, 150- to 300-g/L formation-water salinity), with the use of Bakken crude oil. Both cleaned cores (cleaned by toluene/methanol) and untreated cores (sealed, native state) were investigated. Bakken shale cores were generally oil-wet or intermediate-wet (before introduction of the surfactant formulation). The four surfactant formulations that we tested consistently altered the wetting state of Bakken cores toward water-wet. These surfactants consistently imbibed to displace significantly more oil than brine alone. Four of the surfactant imbibition tests provided enhanced-oil-recovery [(EOR) vs. brine water imbibition alone] values of 6.8 to 10.2% OOIP, incremental over brine imbibition. Ten surfactant imbibition tests provided EOR values of 15.6 to 25.4% OOIP. Thus, imbibition of surfactant formulations appears to have a substantial potential to improve oil recovery from the Bakken formation. Positive results were generally observed with all four surfactants: amphoteric dimethyl amine oxide, nonionic ethoxylated alcohol, anionic internal olefin sulfonate, and anionic linear α-olefin sulfonate. From our work to date, no definitive correlation is evident in surfactant effectiveness vs. temperature, core porosity, core source (i.e., Upper Shale or the Middle Member), or core preservation (sealed) or cleaning before use.

A sandwich-plate model is developed to account for the effect of surface layers on the buckling of piezoelectric nanofilms (PNFs) due to an electrical voltage. The physical mechanisms of the surface effects are investigated and the contributions to the resultant effect are evaluated for surface piezoelectricity, surface stress and surface elasticity. It is found that the surface effect originates primarily from the residual surface stresses and enhanced piezoelectric coefficient due to the surface piezoelectricity. Its influence on the critical buckling voltage of a PNF depends sensitively on the thickness, the length-to-thickness ratio and the nature of residual surface stress. In addition, the intrinsic buckling may occur for a thin PNF where the relatively strong residual surface compression is achieved.

Regulating the chemical/physical features of solution processed metal halide perovskite films by integrating sub‐10 nm nanocrystals is a highly promising strategy to advance their outstanding optoelectronic performance. However, significant challenges remain for the universal embedding of the well‐defined nanocrystals in the film matrix. By generating nanocrystals in desired solvents via pulsed laser irradiation in liquid, the authors demonstrate the effective decoration of sub‐10 nm nanocrystals in perovskite films for enhanced optoelectronic performance. It is believed that this improved performance is due to the modification of the widely adopted “antisolvent” to a novel “anti‐colloidal‐solution” (ACS). Exemplified by a typical ACS; carbon dots in chlorobenzene, its encouraging superiority in regulating, not only the films morphology, but also the electronic structure, is demonstrated. This results in perovskite solar cells with a champion efficiency of 21.41% as well as a pronounced stability over 5000 h in relative humidity of 40%. The capability of nanocrystal embedding for boosted photovoltaic performance is further exploited by employing other laser generated ACSs. Such a strategy may open up a route to regulating hybrid perovskite film performance via nanocrystal embedding for photovoltaics or even beyond optoelectronic applications.
