Magneto-optic spatial light modulators driven by an electric field

Abstract: A magneto-optic spatial light modulator driven by an electric field is fabricated by using the electrostrictive effect of [Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3] (PZT) thin film. As the stress field induced by the PZT thin film reduces the anisotropy energy of the structured garnet film, we find that the pixels can be easily switched in accordance with or without the small external bias field. When peak-to-peak 8 V at the X and Y conductors is applied with the external bias field of 40 Oe at the fabricated device, the selected p… Show more

“…Here, the SGGG is Czochralski-grown single crystal gadolinium gallium garnet with Ca, Mg and Zr substitution. When we applied a voltage to the piezoelectric PZT layer between the upper electrode and bottom one, the PZT layer gives a stress to the Bi:YIG layer according to the equation (1). Figure 1 (a) shows an initial phase of saturated magnetization of the Bi:YIG layer by an external bias field.…”

“…This flat surface plays important roles in the fabrication of the MOSLMs because there is no need for a planarization process for depositing conductor lines for physically isolated pixels. [10][11][12][13] To investigate crystallized properties of two garnet films, the magnetic garnet layer was wet-etched in a H 3 PO 4 and H 2 SO 4 solution at 100 C at an etching speed of 100 nm/min for 1 min. Figure 7 shows SEM images of the wet-etched garnet film of Fig.…”

“…An intriguing property of the defect modes of magnetic photonic crystals (MPCs) is the enhancement of Faraday rotation (EFR), which shows useful applications for reducing the length of rotation devices [3][4][5]. The EFR was predicted early in onedimensional central defect type MPCs where the centre magnetic layer is thicker than other magnetic layers [6].…”
