Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Seminal Vesicle Cyst Associated with Ipsilateral Urinary Anomalies

Abstract: Most seminal vesicle cysts were asymptomatic and did not change during long-term follow-up. MRI is a powerful tool for detecting seminal vesicle cysts and in delineating associated congenital anomalies of the urogenital tract.

“…Numerous case reports have been published on seminal vesicle cysts (SVCs) in adult patients and adolescents [1,2]. SVCs can be congenital or acquired; acquired SVCs are usually associated with inflammation and subsequent obstruction of the ejaculatory duct and SV.…”

“…The majority of published studies have evaluated seminal vesicle cysts with ultrasound, whereas only a minority of studies report findings by MRI [9,17,18]. These studies are limited by small numbers of subjects and lack control groups.…”

“…These studies are limited by small numbers of subjects and lack control groups. For example, Chen et al identified 13 patients with seminal vesicle cysts, all of whom had ipsilateral renal anomalies [17]. Gevenois et al studied 11 patients without polycystic kidney disease, who had concurrent symptoms of prostatic hypertrophy or acute prostatitis, and found five cases with unilateral seminal vesicle cysts (likely acquired) [9].…”

“…These anomalies are associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis in 70% of patients. 1,6 Other anomalies may include renal dysplasia, ectopic ureteral orifice, hydroureter or vertebral deformity. Congenital seminal vesicle cysts are typically asymptomatic and rarely change during long-term follow-up examinations.…”

“…Congenital seminal vesicle cysts are typically asymptomatic and rarely change during long-term follow-up examinations. 6 When symptomatic, these cysts usually present between the second and fourth decades of life. The symptoms are perineal in origin and predominantly consist of pain.…”
