Magnetic resonance imaging correlates of first-episode psychosis in young adult male patients: combined analysis of grey and white matter

Abstract: Several patterns of grey and white matter changes have been separately described in young adults with first-episode psychosis. Concomitant investigation of grey and white matter densities in patients with first-episode psychosis without other psychiatric comorbidities that include all relevant imaging markers could provide clues to the neurodevelopmental hypothesis in schizophrenia

“…Previous findings regarding the fiber integrity of the corpus callosum showed FA reduction in the genu only (Buchsbaum et al, 2006;Whitford et al, 2010) in the SLF bilaterally (Karlsgodt et al, 2009;Rotarska-Jagiela et al, 2009;Perez-Iglesias et al, 2010a), on the left side only (Seok et al, 2007;Szeszko et al, 2008;Karlsgodt et al, 2008;Perez-Iglesias et al, 2010b) or on the right side only (Rowland et al, 2009;Ruef et al, 2012), either in first-episode patients (Perez-Iglesias et al, 2010b;Ruef et al, 2012), patients with onset of the illness within 2 years (Karlsgodt et al, 2008;Szeszko et al, 2008), or with cognition deficits (Rowland et al, 2009). In our study, the SLFIII integrity was reduced in patients without statistically significant difference from controls.…”

“…Although SZ is one of the most complex mental disorders, decades of research which report altered brain structure and function have provided us with some understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms underlying its symptoms [4][5][6][7]. For example, structural brain studies which involved subjects with high risk for psychosis or first-episode psychosis suggest neuroanatomical alterations may underlie the clinical onset of psychotic symptoms [8][9][10][11][12][13]. In addition, a large number of findings from functional brain imaging studies support a leading hypothesis that SZ stems from dysconnectivity, that is, abnormal interactions between wide-spread brain networks [14][15][16][17][18].…”
