As has been demonstrated in recent years, the heterogeneities of coeval magmas can be more successfully revealed by zoned megacrysts rather than by analysis of the whole rocks hosting them. Here, the geochemical heterogeneities of feldspar megacrysts from the Karkonosze granite, Poland, are investigated by LA-ICP-MS. The crystals are the product of migration and growth in regions of poorly mixed magmas. 3D-modeling of the Ba, Sr, and Rb distributions emphasizes the importance of micro-domain growth morphologies. Two models of element behavior-a relative concentration model and a composition gradient model-provide a potentially effective tool for tracking the mixing process on a microscale. Measured concentrations of elements of different mobilities do not agree with what might be expected from the mixing of two end-member magmas. If mixing was the only process occurring, linear correlations between the concentrations of any two elements should be observed; this, however, is not the case. For combinations of any two of the three elements, modeling reveals differing non-linear correlations between concentrations. The megacryst heterogeneities provide an insight into how mixing magmas are chaotically advected to growing crystals and the degree of inter-magma element exchange between the magmas.

Slamet Volcano, in Central Java, Indonesia, is an active calc-alkaline stratovolcano composed largely of basalts and basaltic andesites. The phenocryst mineralogy of the most magnesian basalts (MgO s 7 wt%) has been studied in detail to investigate the nature of early magmatic processes in a large arc volcano. On the basis of stratigraphy, mineralogy, petrography and geochemistry, the studied basalts are subdivided in two groups; Old Slamet (OS) and New Slamet (NS). Olivine in the OS basalts is within the range Fo 92^65 and shows a homogenous composition distribution, with a significant proportion of crystal cores near equilibrium with whole-rock compositions. However, distinct high-and low-Ni sub-populations may be distinguished at any given Fo content (e.g. 0.25^0.10% and 0.320.27 wt% NiO for the low-and high-NiO sub-populations respectively at Fo 85 ). Chromian spinel inclusions within the high-NiO olivines have higher Cr# (75^80) and Fe 2þ /Fe 3þ ratio (2.6^3.2) and lower TiO 2 (0.23^0.44 wt%) contents than those within low-NiO olivines (Cr# 58^77, Fe 2þ /Fe 3þ 1.3^2.5 and TiO 2 0.73^0.91 wt%). Plagioclase and pyroxene phenocrysts display dominantly oscillatory zoning, with cores close to equilibrium with whole-rock compositions. Olivine in the NS basalts is within the range Fo 90À61 and shows a discontinuous distribution of composition including two principal peaks: the first is VFo 78À90 , close to expected equilibrium compositions; the second is VFo 62À70 , clearly too Fe-rich to be in equilibrium with whole-rock compositions and composed mainly of reversely zoned crystals. In terms of NiO content, a single (low-Ni) sub-population is observed. Chromian spinel inclusions with high Cr# and Fe 2þ /Fe 3þ ratio and low TiO 2 are not observed within the olivines of these basalts. Plagioclase and pyroxene phenocrysts are typically reversely zoned and display ubiquitous disequilibrium textures. The cores of these crystals are not in equilibrium with host basalt compositions. The mineralogy of these basalts indicates that the OS basalts resulted from mixing between two parental magmas produced from contrasted sources, probably a relatively depleted and H 2 O-poor harzburgite and a less depleted and more hydrated harzburgite to lherzolite. Subsequent evolution occurred in a magmatic system in which variations in volatile contents and/or temperature played a more important role than magma mixing. The NS basalts were produced from the less depleted source only, but magmas interacted extensively with remnants of earlier crystal mush/magma batches. “…The magma mixing processes can be determined by following as (1) petrographic or textural criteria, which contain the disequilibrium of textures such as sieved plagioclases (Dungan & Rhodes, 1978), the reaction rim and resorption in clinopyroxenes, the presence of unsieved and sieved plagioclases in the same sample (Stimac & Pearce, 1992), and the rounded and embayed crystals (Stimac & Pearce, 1992); (2) compositional criteria, which include the determination of normally and reversely zoned crystals and presence of these crystals in the same sample (Halsort & Rose, 1991;Luhr & Carmichael, 1980). Mineral chemistry, major and trace elements, 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic data are presented for the Late Cretaceous Hamsilos volcanic rocks in the Central Pontides, Turkey. The Hamsilos volcanic rocks mainly consist of basalt, andesite and associated pyroclastics (volcanic breccia, vitric tuff and crystal tuff). They display shoshonitic and high-K calc-alkaline affinities. The shoshonitic rocks contain plagioclase, clinopyroxene, alkali feldspar, phlogopite, analcime, sanidine, olivine, apatite and titanomagnetite, whereas the high-K calc-alkaline rocks contain plagioclase, clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, magnetite / titanomagnetite in microgranular porphyritic, hyalo-microlitic porphyritic and glomeroporphyritic matrix. Mineral chemistry data reveal that the pressure condition of the clinopyroxene crystallisation for the shoshonitic rocks are between 1.4 and 6.3 kbar corresponds to 6-18-km depth and the high-K calc-alkaline rocks are between 5 and 12 km. 40 Ar/ 39 Ar age data changing between 72 ± .5 Ma and 79.0 ± .3 Ma (Campanian) were determined for the Late Cretaceous Hamsilos volcanic rocks, contemporaneous with the subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean beneath the Pontides. The studied volcanic rocks were enriched in the large-ion lithophile and light rare earth element contents, with pronounced depletion in the contents of high-field-strength elements. Chondrite-normalised rare earth element patterns (La N /Lu N = 6-17) show low to medium enrichment, indicating similar sources of the rock suite. Pb/ 204 Pb values between 37.839 and 38.427. The main solidification processes involved in the evolution of the volcanic rocks consist of fractional crystallisation, with minor amounts of crustal contamination ± magma mixing. According to geochemical evidence, the shoshonitic melts in the Hamsilos volcanic rocks were possibly derived from the low degree of partial melting of a subcontinental lithospheric mantle (SCLM), while the high-K calc-alkaline melts were derived from relatively high degree of partial melting of SCLM that was enriched by fluids and/or sediments from a subduction of oceanic crust.
