Macrophage polarization by phytotherapy in the tumor microenvironment

Abstract: Several signaling pathways were involved in M1 (classic) and M2 (alternative) macrophage polarization. Disruption of M2-related signaling pathways and improvement of M1-related signaling pathways can be identified as one of the cancer therapeutic approaches. Prevention of macrophage differentiation into M2 by different herbal agents with antitumor properties can be considered as a promising therapeutic target for cancer patients. In the present review study, we investigated the effect of herbal compounds on M1… Show more

“…Studies have shown that medicinal herbs and their derivatives produce anti-cancer effects by regulating the polarization of macrophages in the tumor microenvironment. 24,25 Our data showed that CRAE inhibited tumor growth in myeloma xenograft model and had a good combined therapeutic effect with bortezomib. Through a series of studies, we proved that CRAE could increase the expression of M1-specific indicators in tumor microenvironment and confirmed the activation of TLR4-NF-κB pathway was the main internal mechanism of CRAE mediated macrophage remodeling to inhibit the growth of myeloma.…”

“…This resulted in a reduction in CD206 expression and a decrease in the expression of genes related to M2 polarization. Furthermore, Astragaloside IV impeded the invasion, migration, and angiogenesis induced by M2-conditioned media in A549 and H1299 cells ( Saeedifar et al, 2021 ). Moreover, Astragaloside IV treatment led to a reduction in the number of M2 macrophages present in tumor tissues ( Xu et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Macrophages are crucial to tumor development and at present, some compounds with the ability of regulating macrophage polarization and recruitment to tumor sites have been found (Saeedifar et al, 2021). Many extracts of traditional Chinese medicine have been reported to have anti-tumor effects, some of which can regulate the polarization of macrophages.…”
