Lysine requirement studies in modern genotype barrows dependent on age, protein deposition and dietary lysine efficiency

Abstract: N balance experiments were conducted to derive age-dependent model parameters for modelling of lysine (Lys) requirements in growing pigs. Modern genotype barrows from 16 litters were utilized (four piglets/litter) at 15, 30, 50, 70, 90 and 110 kg body weight respectively. Six diets provided graded dietary protein supply (40 to 320 g/kg) by a constant mixture of barley, wheat, potato protein, wheat gluten, soybean protein concentrate and crystalline amino acids. Lys was set as the first limiting dietary amino a… Show more

“…Assuming 85% as an average of ileal lysine digestibility, these recommendations are in the scope of presented requirement data for 100 g daily protein deposition. Our reported lysine requirement data for piglets are also in line with several other studies (Gatel et al, 1992;Whittemore et al, 2003;Wecke and Liebert, 2009). For feed formulation, Bertolo et al (2005) recommended 0.91% ileal digestible lysine (24.1 kg BW; 982 g daily feed intake), which are in line with our data (85% predicted ileal lysine digestibility) and several other studies (Martinez and Knabe, 1990;Coma et al, 1995).…”

“…Analysis of N-balance data and modelling procedure was conducted according to Liebert and Wecke (2008). Additional current applications of the N-utilization model are reported elsewhere (Thong and Liebert, 2004a,b,c;Liebert, 2008;Wecke and Liebert, 2009). …”

“…Model-specific parameters as utilized in current applications were justified in earlier and recent publications (e.g. Liebert et al, 2000;Thong and Liebert, 2004a-c;Samadi and Liebert, 2006a, b, 2007a, b, 2008Liebert and Benkendorff, 2007a, b;Liebert, 2008Liebert, , 2009Liebert and Wecke, 2008;Samadi et al, 2017;Wecke and Liebert, 2009Wecke et al, 2016;Dorigam et al, 2017) and can be condensed as follows: , b is the slope of the NR curve indicating the dietary protein quality (the slope of the curve for a given protein quality is independent on NI), and e is the basic number of the natural logarithm (ln).…”
