Luting of ceramic crowns with a self-adhesive cement: Effect of contamination on marginal adaptation and fracture strength

Abstract: Objectives: This study evaluated the percentages of continuous margins (%CM) and fracture strength (FS) of crowns made out from blocs of leucite-reinforced ceramic (IPS Empress CAD) and luted with a representative self-adhesive cement (RelyX Unicem) under four contaminating agents: saliva, water, blood, a haemostatic solution containing aluminium chloride (pH= 0.8) and a control group with no contamination. Study Design: %CM at both tooth-cement (TC) and cement-crown (CC) interfaces were determined before and… Show more

“…The cement margin width of a milled zirconia crown typically ranges from 42 to 151 µm [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. However, a significant marginal degradation of resin cement after the cementation of prostheses was observed [ 25 , 26 , 27 ]. Indeed, the eluted resin monomers from the marginal cement of the crown restorations luted onto the tooth samples were detected even with enough irradiation [ 28 ].…”

“…In addition, the pulp's inflammatory response is low and release of fluoride ions can be observed. Differently, the pretreatment of the ceramic restoration is necessary [10,13,18,19].…”

“…In a qualitative analysis, Slavcheva et al [18] evaluated the marginal adaptation and fracture strength of crowns made of ceramic reinforced with leucite (IPS Empress CAD / Ivoclar Vivadent) and cemented with a self-adhesive cement RelyX U200. Using thermal cycling as adhesive degradation method, they observed that there was no significant difference in the continuous margins that could be detected on the groups contaminated with saliva, water, blood, and control; as well as there was no difference in the marginal adaptation between the groups.…”
