The efficacy and safety of dutasteride compared with finasteride in treating men with androgenetic alopecia: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Aim We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dutasteride and finasteride in treating men with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) during a 24-week treatment cycle. Methods Randomized controlled trials of dutasteride and finasteride for treating AGA were searched using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. The data were calculated using Rev Man v5.3.0. The reference lists of retrieved studies were also investigated. … Show more

“…The frontal area also showed a significant response, but less than that of the vertex, which is consistent with many previous reports [17,18]. In previous studies, the vertex type of AGA showed a more rapid and obvious improvement with oral 1 mg finasteride compared with the other areas [18,19].…”

“…In addition to finasteride, a 5α-R2 inhibitor, a novel molecule called dutasteride has recently been developed which is able to affect both 5α-R1 and 5α-R2. Oral dutasteride (0.5 mg/day) is another option, but there are no studies that compare its efficacy to that of finasteride [24]. MXD was originally developed as an antihypertensive agent, but attracted interest as a potential HL therapy; indeed, patients treated with MXD developed generalized hypertrichosis [25].…”

“…DHT subsequently binds to AR, enhancing the transcription of the catagen inducer, TGFβ . Inhibition of 5αR is targeted in treatment of AGA (eg Finasteride), though alternative AGA therapies include androgen antagonists …”
