Magnitude and Determinants of Uncontrolled Blood Pressure Among Adult Hypertensive Patients on Follow-Up at Nekemte Referral Hospital, Western Ethiopia

Abstract: Background: Hypertension is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among noncommunicable diseases. The rate of blood pressure (BP) control among hypertensive patients is poor and the reasons for poor control of BP remain poorly understood globally. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the magnitude and determinants of uncontrolled blood pressure among adult hypertensive patients on follow-up at Nekemte referral hospital (NRH). Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from February t… Show more

“…The study conducted in Addis Ababa had some patients who smoke lower percentage of female patients than the present study. On the other hand, the result of the current study is lower than the findings of previous studies in Ethiopia [ 38 , 39 ]. The discrepancy of these findings may be justified by the difference in magnitude of co-morbidity, socio-demographic characteristics, and lifestyle practice of study participants.…”

“…Being non-adherent was found to be less likely to have controlled blood pressure compared to being adherent in the present study (AOR = 0.51, 95% CI: 0.324–0.79, P = 0.003). This finding is in line with the findings of other studies [ 24 , 38 , 39 ].…”

“…According to the current HTN management guidelines (51), clinic visits every 2-4 months should be conducted for patients who have achieved the target BP control. However, only 14.1% of our study participants had every three months follow-ups visits, while nearly three-quarters (72.1%) of them, and in other studies, the majority of hypertensives (52,53) had the visit follow-up clinic scheduled monthly and/or bimonthly for HTN that may suggest patients were being monitored more closely to achieve BP control that required medication adjustment (based on patients' adherence and possible drug side effects) and evaluation of target organ disease and the co-existence of comorbid conditions. Hypertensives-HCP visits should go beyond BP monitoring and medication refills.…”
