<b>Species diversity and seasonal variation in the composition of a bat community in the semi-arid brazilian caatinga

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The caatinga scrublands are relatively poorly-studied, and few data are available on the biome's chiropteran fauna. The present study focuses on the bat community of the arboreal caatinga of Serra da Guia. Bats were trapped in mist-nets on three new moon nights per month between October, 2008, and September, 2009. A total of 157 individuals were captured, representing 12 species. Species richness estimated by Jackknife1 was 14.8. Glossophaga soricina and Carollia perspicillata were by far the most c… Show more

“…The shift towards cave roosting by Artibeus planirostris in the Caatinga is probably related to the constraints of using the deciduous foliage of the Caatinga (Rocha et al. ). Likewise, Artibeus jamaicensis is recorded more commonly in caves in the Antilles, while it uses tree hollows and foliage in continental Central America (Silva‐Taboada , Morrison & Handley , Genoways et al.…”

“…With the new records presented here, the total number of bat species known to occur in the restinga has increased to 41, and the number of genera to 28 genera (including Saccopteryx and Molossops). The records of Molossops temminckii and Eptesicus brasiliensis also increase the number of bat species known to occur in the state of Sergipe to 50 (Mikalauskas, 2005;Mikalauskas et al, 2006Mikalauskas et al, , 2011Mikalauskas et al, , 2014Ástua and Guerra, 2008;Feijó and Nunes, 2010;Rocha et al, 2010Rocha et al, , 2014aRocha et al, , 2014bRocha et al, , 2013Rocha et al, , 2015Donato et al, 2012;Brito and Bocchiglieri, 2012;Bocchiglieri et al, 2016;Souza et al, 2016;Bomfim et al, 2017).…”

“…There are a few ecological studies on topics such as 'activity' (Kuenzi & Morrison 2003, Dalhoumi et al 2014, Fisher-Phelps et al 2017, 'seasonality' (da Rocha et al 2015) and 'water bodies' (Adams & Hayes 2008, Razgour et al 2010, Lisón & Calvo 2011, Hagen & Sabo 2012, Sirami et al 2013, Lisón & Calvo 2014 Bats in semi-arid and arid landscapes 2015). Studies on 'pest control', 'ecosystem services' and 'zoonotics' are very scarce (Memish et al 2013, Silva-Iturriza et al 2013, Maganga et al 2014.…”
