Low-Input Pineapple Crops With High Quality Fruit: Promising Impacts of Locally Integrated and Organic Fertilisation Compared to Chemical Fertilisers

Abstract: SUMMARYFruit and vegetable farming generally involves high levels of chemical inputs despite the fact that consumers are increasingly concerned about the sanitary and organoleptic aspects of fruit quality. Pineapple is largely subject to these issues since it is dominated by conventional monocropping with high levels of agrochemical inputs due to nitrogen (N) and potassium (K) fertilisation, weed management, crop protection and flowering induction. However, low-input pineapple cropping systems are both rare an… Show more

“…These findings were consistent with the works of [17] and [12], showing the highest TSS and lowest titrable acidity respectively with application of M. puriens green manure and dry grass of panicum maximum. The residues effects were improved with burying.…”

“…Mineral and/or organic fertilizer effects on fruit quality attributes has been reported by some authors [12,[14][15][16][17]32,38], but the impact of pineapple residues on fruit quality was not explored. Likewise, information about fertilization influence on organic sugars and acids had not yet been reported.…”

“…Darnaudery et al. () found that the long‐term use of organic fertilizers can reduce total acid and increase total soluble solids contents (TSS) in pineapples. Marzouk and Kassem () found that higher fruit TSS and total sugars content in dates were obtained by the application of organic manures alone or in combination with mineral NPK, compared with mineral fertilization alone.…”

“…Therefore, increasing SOC stock in sandy soils with high salinity plays an important role in the productivity of crops. Compared with mineral fertilizers, organic fertilizers have been shown to improve fruit quality (Darnaudery, Fournier, & Léchaudel, 2016;Madrid, Barba, Sánchez, & García, 2010;Marzouk & Kassem, 2011;Rapisarda et al, 2010). Darnaudery et al (2016) found that the long-term use of organic fertilizers can reduce total acid and increase total soluble solids contents (TSS) in pineapples.…”
