A low profile DBS antenna is a very attractive option for RV and SUV DBS customers. However, for "on the move" services, steerable antennas would be required. Mechanical steering is commonly used, as it is inexpensive, but bulky. Low profile phased array apertures are the desired alternative. However, the required production volume is currently moderate, and still does not justify MMICs' high development expenses. Hence, we have developed a low cost 5-bit Ku-band hybrid digital phase shifter circuitry to fit today's market needs. The developed hybrid circuit design is fully based on surface mount components including the switched packaged HJ-FET devices for cost reduction. The overall loss is 3 dB ± 1.5 dB, the circuit is 30 mm 2 , and the estimated cost is only a few dollars for moderate quantities.
