Longitudinal study of neurological soft signs in first‐episode early‐onset psychosis

Abstract: Despite the greater reduction of NSS in patients than in controls along the follow-up, patients still have more neurological signs than healthy controls; therefore, these signs may be considered a trait marker. NSS do not seem to be specific to schizophrenia as they are present in different EOPs.

“…The importance of prospective and longitudinal studies has been proposed because they provide novel insights into the pathophysiological processes of SCZ. In fact, several studies have examined the longitudinal developmental changes in potential endophenotypes or biomarkers mainly using neuroimaging techniques to capture pre-psychosis onset and the transition from the at-risk state to the illness or psychotic state [33], [34], [35], [36]. However, to accomplish these purposes, less costly and more easily implemented techniques are desirable if the methods are sensitive enough and can quantify performance sufficiently to detect onset and transition.…”

“…A longitudinal study of 110 first-episode psychosis patients (53 with schizophrenia) younger than 18 years of age revealed more NSS in patients than controls at baseline and at the 2-year follow-up, suggesting them to be a trait marker of the investigated diseases [2]. Correlation analyses between subscales of the Neurological Evaluation Scale and clinical and pharmacological parameters were also performed, but only p values without correction for multiple comparisons were reported using a quite liberal statistical threshold.…”

“…This is why it is present already during the early stages of a mental disorder (e.g. schizophrenia) and even during the prodromal phase (Peralta et al, 2011; Gunasekaran et al, 2016; Janssen et al, 2009; Mayoral et al, 2012; Thomann et al, 2009a,b; Fountoulakis et al, 2017b).…”
