Longevity of direct diastema closure and recontouring restorations with resin composites in maxillary anterior teeth: A 4‐year clinical evaluation

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the clinical performance of resin composite restorations and to investigate causes of failure. Materials and Methods: The longevity of 216 restorations in 53 patients (mean age, 33.3 years) was retrospectively evaluated according to Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) criteria. Dental history and photographic data were used to evaluate diastema closure (n = 199) and recontouring (n = 19) restorations comprising microhybrid (Essentia Universal, GC Corp.), nanohybrid (Ceram.x One, De… Show more

“…In addition, these restorations are easy to repair, and studies with 4-year follow-up or longer have already shown that these materials have excellent quality and excellent esthetic and functional results for diastema closure even in the long term. [ 15 ]…”

“…The main limitation of rehabilitation performed in this case is related to the main factors responsible for the failure of composite resins over time, such as bruxism, eating habits, and smoking. [ 15 16 ] Concomitantly, the consumption of foods as coffee/cola/tea directly impacts the incompatibility of shades of composite resin restorations. [ 16 ]…”

“…The abrasiveness of the finishing and polishing materials is very important, as the objective in composite restorations is to obtain the maximum surface smoothness with minimum surface material loss, clinically, especially when performing the additive layering technique rather than the subtractive technique (22,23). Accordingly, several previous studies have observed the effectiveness of composite polishing systems on surface smoothness or color stability (5-9, 12, 13, 20, 24-26).…”
