Long‐Term Experience with Biocompatible Ossicular Implants

Abstract: The senior author's 8-year personal experience with biocompatible ossicular implants is reviewed. Four hundred sixty-one consecutive operations, in which high-density polyethylene sponge ossicular replacement prostheses were used, are grouped according to the Bellucci classification of chronic otitis media. “…Thorough analysis of the results in this series demonstrated no significant effects on successful hearing results by age, presence or absence of cholesteatoma or whether a mastoidectomy was concurrently performed. As expected, 17,18 Belluci class 3 had less satisfactory results than classes 1 or 2. Hearing results overall appeared to remain stable over time with little of the decay that has been noted in some other series.…”

“…Daniels et al, 15 Brown, 21 Shelton and Sheehy, 9 Kinney, 22 and Lau and Tos 17 noted that hearing results were better in CWU mastoidectomies. Management of the canal wall did not appear to influence the hearing results in the present study or in the results reported by Emmett et al 14 and Edelstein et al 6,12 …”

“…This finding is similar to those reported by Goldenberg, 23 Daniels et al, 15 and Brackmann et al 20 and slightly better than those reported by other authors. Prosthesis extrusion is reduced in studies with patients who have a cartilage interposed between the tympanic membrane, as noted by Emmett et al 14 and Colletti et al 24…”
