Location of the Mandibular Foramen According to the Amount of Dental Alveoli

Abstract: SUMMARY:The aim of this study was to analyze the anatomotopographic location of the mandibular foramen in the right and left ramus, and to verify the influence of the amount of dental alveoli on the foramen position. Thirty-five adult dry human mandibles of Araraquara Dental School, UNESP -São Paulo State University were assessed, with or without dental alveoli. Measurements were obtained, using a ruler and a digital caliper. The following distances were measured: FI -distance between the lowest point of the m… Show more

“…Valente et al [20] have measured the distance of mandibular foramen from the apex of retromolar trigone and reported it to be 14.23±2.57 mm on the right side and 14.40±2.48 mm on the left side. In the present study, the measurements were 12.27±2.13 mm on the right side and 12.13±2.35 mm on the left side.…”

“…In humans, the position of the foramen seems to show symmetry between the right and left rami. Position also appears to be determined by the size, width and height of the mandible, being more posterior in a wider ramus [ 34 ]. However, there are few age-related changes in the relative position of the MF, particularly anterio-posteriorly from the alveolar crestal plane [ 35 ].…”

“…However, there are few age-related changes in the relative position of the MF, particularly anterio-posteriorly from the alveolar crestal plane [ 35 ]. Size also exerts little influence on the position of the MF relative to the occlusal plane of the molars, where it is either level or slightly below [ 33 ], tending to be lower in children [ 34 ]. These findings are consistent with those found in the elephant mandible (see Fig 3 ).…”

“…Situated at the centre of the medial aspect of the mandibular ramus, inferiorly and posteriorly to the lingula, the mandibular foramen shows no differences regarding shape, size and location when comparing its features on the left and right side of the mandible (Iwaki et al;Valente et al;Ennes & Medeiros, 2009;Martone et al, 1993).…”

“…Studies on the location of the mandibular foramen (MF) provide the practitioner with improved awareness of MF location, thus, lowering the risk of having the inferior alveolar nerve injured, as well as improving the efficacy of inferior alveolar nerve block (Nicholson, 1985;Daw et al, 1999;Valente et al, 2012;da Fontoura et al, 2002).…”
