“…In agreement with the literature of the day (see, for example, Freudenburg, 1982;Cortese and Jones, 1977;Wilkinson et al, 1982;Little, 1977;Gilmore and Duff, 1975), and in an attempt to avoid social disruptions associated with boomtowns (England and Albrecht, 1984), IPP officials spent approximately US$45 million on improving the community's roads, sewers, schools, county and city administration buildings, fire and police stations, and city parks and recreation areas prior to the arrival of new construction workers.…”

“…The rapid social changes that has accompanied the swift expansion of the oil extraction industry appear to have placed a major burden on pre-existing regulatory mechanisms and rendered them unable to regulate the community in the same manner they did prior to 2007. The increase in rates of violent crime and suicide were observed to be substantial; however, these numbers must be interpreted with care considering the small base numbers pre-boom (Freudenburg, 1980;Wilkinson et al, 1982). While this caution was exercised, as suggested by Freudenburg (1980), inferences can be made from "general patterns of findings" (p. 4-5) within the Bakken region regardless of rate change.…”

“…Finally, rates of oil production for the Bakken Region were secured from the North Dakota Department of Mineral Resources website with the peak daily oil production by month for each year utilized in the analysis. changing crime and suicide rates, multiple authors (Freudenburg 2002;Wilkinson et al 1982) urge caution with the use of such quantitative data due to small base numbers in many pre-boom communities. While rates and rate changes are used for the purposes of this study, trends in rates of violent crime and suicide are given equal magnitude and attention.…”
