Local Ecological Knowledge in Angklung Paglak of Using Community of Banyuwangi, Indonesia

Abstract: Angklung paglak is a traditional musical instrument made of bamboo of Using (an ethnic community of Banyuwangi). This study was conducted to reveal the Local Ecological Knowledge (LEK) in angklung paglak manufacturing and its correlation to bamboo conservation. The data collecting was done through documentation, participant observations, and interviews. For ensuring the validity and reliability of the data, cross-referenced and repeated information methods were used. The local knowledge in angklung making incl… Show more

“…Some of the theories used to explore ecological wisdom on-site were land-sense ecology (County et al, 2020), cultural ecosystems (Chen et al, 2020), bioclimatic wisdom (Winarto, Santosa and Ekasiwi, 2015), and spatiotemporal features (Eng, 2019). All these studies have mainly discussed the space of traditional settlements, while other studies have explored ecological wisdom in specific sites to understand people's adaptation to environmental change (Muhdhar et al, 2018;Modeen, 2021).…”

“…The exploration of ecological wisdom in a site with abundant natural resources is mainly related to how people interact with and manage the ecological factor and conserve their natural resources. Most studies have been conducted in traditional villages (Kakoty, 2018;Muhdhar et al, 2018;Permana et al, 2019;Modeen, 2021), while others have been conducted in a historical agricultural system (Li et al, 2020).…”

“…This approach is an attitude of mind by which Wandamen communities manage their Black Fruit trees to meet the dual goals of fulfilling subsistence needs and conserving the resources. According to Utomo et al [35], the local knowledge in angklung (a musical instrument made of bamboo in Indonesia) making includes selecting benel (Gigantochloa atter) and ori (Bambusa arundinacea) as angklung materials, the age of the bamboo (more than three years old), the best month for logging between August and October, and air drying the bamboo without exposing it to direct sunlight and in an upright position.…”

“…Angklung is a bamboo musical instrument made from two to four bamboo tubes suspended in a bamboo frame inscribed in 2010 on the representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity. The research and published paper on angklung discussed acoustic analysis, design engineering, and species materials, as well as preserving angklung as a global cultural heritage, especially in Indonesia [46][47][48][49][50][51]. Papers on other bamboo musical instruments in Indonesia also published both traditional musical instruments such as karinding and bundengan [52,53], as well as modern musical instruments such as guitars and violins [54][55][56].…”
