Load shortening characteristics of marine grade aluminium alloy plates in longitudinal compression

Abstract: This study presents detailed and rigorous numerical analysis for a parametric series of unstiffened aluminium plates typical of those used in lightweight ships and equivalent thin walled stiffened structures. The study is undertaken with a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure using ABAQUS. The strength behaviour of the plates under a progressively increasing longitudinal in-plane load are shown to be affected by a number of parameters including the alloy, geometric imperfection shape, heat affected zone… Show more

“…In marine industry, metals like aluminum alloy play tremendous roles in which they are used widely for shipbuilding, chemical plant, and offshore structure [22,23]. The increasing sector demand for higher speed performances and cheap assembly technology has made aluminum alloy as one of the best choices as a structural material for boats, vessels, and components [24,25]. The advantages of aluminum in many ways have propelled it into one of the widely used metals in the marine industries.…”

“…The results show good agreement with Eurocode' s formulation. The study was extended by Benson et al (2013b). A parametric dataset of loadshortening curves accounting for the axial compressive load was derived in assessing the ultimate global strength of aluminium hull girder using the progressive collapse method.…”

“…It can be seen that the increase of n will result in the flatness of the stress-strain curve. For 6082-T6 alloy, n is in the range of 15-47 (n = 30 is typically used), and the stress-strain curves are close to the elastic-perfectly plastic approximation (Zha and Moan 2001;Shesharma et al 2010;Benson et al 2013b). Accordingly, the elastic-perfectly plastic material model is selected, and it is acceptable for the comparative study, the ultimate strength of panels that are all made of 6082-T6 alloy.…”
