Listeria monocytogenes in Raw Milk: Detection, Incidence, and Pathogenicity

Abstract: To determine the incidence of Listeria monocytogenes in raw milk, an isolation method was evaluated and used to analyze milk from three areas of the United States. The incidence varied by area from 0% in California to 7% in Massachusetts, with an overall incidence of 4.2%. The highest incidence found in any area during a single sampling period was 12% in Massachusetts in March 1985. During that same sampling, the incidence for all Listeria species was 26%. Of the 27 L. monocytogenes strains isolated during the… Show more

“…After 24 and 72 h incubation 10 ml of the buffered peptone water was added to 30 ml of listeria enrichment broth [9]. The listeria enrichment broth was subcultured onto acriflavine-ceftazidime agar (CM856, Oxoid) and incubated further for 24 h at 30 'C.…”

“…The same study was carried out in Spain in which 67 samples, but the prevalence rate 44.7 % very high for listeria monocytogenes by Garayzabal et al, (1987). In USA, another study was carried out by Lovett et al, (1987) which showed high occurrence of listeria monocytogenes because 200 samples were observed in which 14 were positive for listeria monocytogenes. Harvey et al, (1992) studied 176 samples in which prevalence is 15.3 % for Listeria monocytogenes.…”

“…This organism has been isolated from silage [2], natural vegetation [3], soil [4], wild and domestic animals [5] and water [6]. It also is reported to occur in foods such as raw milk [7], soft cheeses [8], raw chickens [9], pork meat [10], and minced beef [11].…”
