Lipid, lipoprotein, and apolipoprotein assessment during an 8-wk very-low-calorie diet

Abstract: The influence of a very-low-calorie diet (VLCD) on lipid pattern is controversial. To evaluate the long-term effect of semistarvation on lipid patterns, a group of severely obese patients [aged 37 +/- 12 y, body mass index (BMI) 40.0 +/- 0.9] underwent a VLCD for 8 wk. Total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), and HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TGs), apolipoproteins A1 (apo A1) and B (apo B) were analyzed every week. TC (6.07 +/- 0.23 vs 5.53 +/- 0.25 mmol/L, P less than 0.0008), HDL-C (mmol/L … Show more

“…The percent decrease in total cholesterol was positively correlated with the percent of weight loss in some [75], but not all studies [70]. Similarly, triglyceride levels decrease between 14% and 58% in the short-term [71][72][73]76,77]. HDL cholesterol responses are not that uniform: several studies documented a decrease of HDL cholesterol levels [70,73,[76][77][78][79] when lipid profiles were measured within the first 2 to 8 weeks of VLCDs.…”

Others report increases in HDL cholesterol, but in these studies lipid profiles were measured later, at about 3 to 12 months into the VLCD program [72,74,79].…”

“…VLCD may be indicated for those patients with a BMI > 30 kg/m 2 (Pi-Sunyer, 1992;World Health Organization, 1998), and in those patients with a BMI of 27-30 kg/m 2 who have medical conditions that might respond to rapid weight loss (National Task Force on the Prevention and Treatment of Obesity, 1993). These diets can acutely reduce hypertension (Eliahou et al 1992) and significantly improve lipid profiles (Parenti et al 1992;Byson et al 1996). Improvement in insulin sensitivity and enhanced glucose metabolism have also been documented (Eliahou et al 1992).…”
