A series of 1,467 Caucasian patients with non‐disseminated lymphomas of extranodal origin was taken from data collected by the End Results Group of cancer registries in the years 1950‐1964. Excluding Hodgkin's disease, about one fourth of the lymphomas reported arose in sites other than lymph nodes. Survival rates and distributions are listed for site of origin, major histologic types, sex, age, and extent of disease. For the more frequently reported sites, survival rates are given according to the type of initial treatment used. The prognosis of patients with extranodal lymphomas is compared with that for “all cancers” of the same site, and the lymphoma patients appear to fare appreciably better when the site of origin is stomach, lung, or tonsil.

Results indicated that MODS, defined as dysfunction of at least 2 organ systems, can be identified in dogs with sepsis and that organ system dysfunction increased the odds of death.

Clinical stage was strongly associated with prognosis for dogs with splenic hemangiosarcoma. Chemotherapy was effective in prolonging survival time during the early portion of the follow-up period. Combinations of doxorubicin-based conventional protocols and cyclophosphamide-based metronomic protocols appeared to be more effective than either type of chemotherapy alone, but prolongations in survival time resulting from current protocols were modest.

Over 5,000 histologically confirmed cases of cancer of the pancreas from the End Results Group of cancer registries have been examined for differences in behavior by epidemiologic and pathologic variables. Thirteen percent had a specific histologic diagnosis other than "adenocarcinoma," "carcinoma," or "cancer." The 92 cases of islet cell carcinoma were unique, having a much younger age a t diagnosis (two-thirds instead of one-third diagnosed under the age of 60), a locational preference for the body and/or tail (only 40% instead of 70% occurring in the head of the pancreas), and a very favorable survival experience (15 year relative survival of 14%). Of cancers of the exocrine pancreas, the 64 cases with papillary histology were most distinct, two-thirds being found in women, 18% instead of 10% being localized, and having relatively favorable survival (30% one-year survival, 5% three-year survival). Patients whose tumors revealed squamous metaplasia occurred in general at older ages and had unusually poor survival. Analysis by anatomic location showed an increasing percentage of carcinomas occurring in the head of the pancreas with increasing age. Analysis of "adenocarcinomas" by histologic grade indicated that grade may carry some prognostic information not explained by difference in stage. A striking gradient of decreasing survival with increasing age did not explain, and was not explained by survival gradients in other variables.

Calculating changes in plasma lactate concentration following initial treatment in dogs with GDV may assist in determining prognosis and identifying patients that require more aggressive treatment.

Background. Breast cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States; annual breast cancer deaths are exceeded only by those for lung cancer. Methods. Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program registry of the National Cancer Institute comprising 158,621 invasive and 10,639 in situ cases of microscopically confirmed breast carcinomas registered for the years 1973‐1987 have been analyzed. Relative frequencies, incidence rates, and 5‐year relative survival rates were examined by selected variables of interest. Invasive and in situ breast carcinomas and sarcomas were analyzed separately. Results. Infiltrating duct carcinoma was the largest group of female breast cancer, constituting 67.9% of the total with a 5‐year relative survival of 79%. All other invasive carcinomas were compared with this group. Lobular carcinoma was the second largest group, only 6.3%, and a 5‐year relative survival of 84%. Medullary carcinoma was the third most common with 2.8% and a 5‐year relative survival of 82%. Other types included mucinous (colloid) adenocarcinoma, 2.2%, 5‐year relative survival of 95%; comedocarcinoma, 1.4%, 5‐year relative survival of 87%; Paget's disease (nipple and other breast), 1.1%, 5‐year relative survival of 79%; papillary carcinoma, 0.9%, 5‐year relative survival of 95%; tubular adenocarcinoma, 0.7%, 5‐year relative survival of 96% and inflammatory carcinoma, 0.5%, 5‐year relative survival of 18%. Carcinoma in situ was registered as intraductal, lobular, combined ductal and lobular, papillary, and carcinoma in situ, not otherwise specified. The relative survival for all forms of carcinomas in situ was approximately 100%. Sarcomas and malignant tumors not further classified are also considered. Conclusions. The various histologic types of breast cancer exhibit differences in regard to relative frequency, site pattern within the breast, and patient survival. The SEER program data base of breast cancer is the largest single population‐based reference source for breast cancer in the United States. This program is a valuable resource for information on frequency, percentage, and incidence rates by histologic type as well as survival rates of patients with breast cancer.
