Link Margin for Wireless Radio Communication Link

Abstract: The systematic evaluation of the link budget calculation for the satellite and terrestrial communication is presented in this article. Communication link between the satellite and earth station is dependent on various propagation and associated losses which are either constant or vary with weather conditions. Role of receiver noise, antenna pointing mechanism, atmospheric effects, slant height, interferences, bit error rate on the link margin are detailed in this article. Various equations for link budget calc… Show more

“…The effect on link margin parameters with proposed redundancy schemes is tabulated in Table 2 using theoretically calculated values 22 . The first row of Table 2 consists of the link budget 22 calculations of the existing link taken as reference with BER of 10^-6. For the FS scheme can be observed, due to increase in data rate the range drops by 50% with other link parameters kept constant.…”

“…The multiplexed data is converted into a serial data and then coded as a NRZ-L or Bi-phase data [1] in the PCM encoder. The serial data is further applied to the pre-modulation filter (PMF) as recommended by IRIG-106 [3]. This continuous serial data passes through a lowpass Bessel filter [1] called as a PMF to suppress higher order harmonics and thus band limit the signal.…”

“…In the launch scenario, the telemetry system has to transmit data from the launch point to the end point of a vehicle. The system has to meet the link margin [1,3,4] of a long-range aerospace vehicle with respect to the ground receiving stations. As the data rate increases, the required bandwidth also increases, resulting in a decrease in signal to noise ratio (SNR) for a defined bit error rate.…”

“…As the adoption of wireless communication across the globe increases, wireless communication link designers seek to adopt measures to ensure optimal performance of the system. One factor that significantly impacts on system performance is the communication link path length [2][3][4][5]. Generally, the maximum link path is determined from the knowledge of the link parameters applied in the link budget equation [6][7][8][9][10][11][12].…”
