Lighter-Than-Air Wind Energy Systems

Abstract: Several wind energy concepts utiliz e airborne systems that contain lighterthan-air gas, which supplements aerodynamic lift and expands these systems' available operating regimes. While lighter-than-air systems can incorporate the traction and crosswind fl ight motions of their heavier-than-air counterparts, several lighterthan-air concepts have also been designed to deliver large amounts of power under completely stationary operation and remain aloft during periods of intermittent wind. This chapter provides … Show more

“…Another project based on flying wind turbines in a stationary position has been developed by Altaeros Energies, a Massachusetts-based business led by MIT and Harvard alumni [94][95][96]. In this case, instead of using wings lift to fly, they use a ring shaped aerostat with a wind turbine installed in its interior (as in Fig.…”

“…It is the first book that provides a consistent compilation of fundamental theories, current research and development activities, and economic and regulatory issues. The book is divided into 35 chapters [3,[7][8][9][10][11][12]15, that demonstrate the relevance of AWE and the important role that this technology can play in the transition to a renewable energy economy.…”

“…This innovative technology for renewable energy exploration uses aerial devices rather than traditional wind turbines to make use of wind kinetic energy and it can remain in the air through aerodynamic forces [2][3][4]. Unlike wind turbines with towers, airborne wind power systems operate in flight and they are connected to a foundation by a cable, either to transmit the energy generated at the airfoil or to transmit mechanical energy to the [9], a generator positioned on the ground generator with rigid airfoil from Ampyx Power [11], a GoogleX system with onboard generators [12], balloon with onboard turbine from Altaeros Energies [15], and generator positioned on the floor with flexible airfoil from UFSCkite [16].…”
