The aim of the pilot study is to examine the possibilities of mobile phone location data in geographical research of the everyday life and individual spatial mobility of the population. Developing and testing a new research instrument thus represent the key aims of the pilot study. The proposed technique is 'tried out' on a group of young people living or working in Prague. Their daily activities and spatial mobility are explored and discussed against the everyday and geographical context of the young people´s lives. Theoretically the study draws on the strong tradition of time geography as well as on the new geography of everyday life. Methodologically the research combines two different types of data sources and the relevant analytical tools. First, mobile phone location data are used to record the daily trajectories of the participants. Second, deep interpretative interviews are carried out to understand the reasons and motives behind the recorded daily trajectories. Despite a few technical obstacles in mobile phone location data processing, the pilot study proved the very promising potential of this source, especially in combination with interviews, when studying the patterns of the everyday life and individual spatial mobility of an urban population.

Does civic participation lead to a large social network? This study claims that high levels of civic participation may obstruct individual social embeddedness. Using survey data from the German Survey on Volunteering (Deutscher Freiwilligensurvey; 1999–2009), this study conducts macro- as well as multi-level regressions to examine the link between civic participation and social embeddedness. Findings reveal that civic participation on the sub-national regional level is not generally associated with social embeddedness, but it affects the participants’ and non-participants’ possibilities for friendships differently. This holds especially true in urban areas, but the effect cannot be found in rural areas. The analysis has implications for further research to enhance the social embeddedness of the excluded.

Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile.resumen | Las transformaciones socioespaciales de la comuna de Santiago llevan a plantear la tesis de que ellas son concomitantes al arribo de habitantes de diferentes orígenes residenciales, situación que se manifiesta en la coexistencia de procesos de gentrificación, verticalización y tugurización. El propósito del estudio fue indagar esta realidad desde una dimensión cualitativa y aleatoria, para lo cual se aplicaron 64 entrevistas en profundidad en las cuatro zonas de mayor cambio en la comuna. Su objetivo fue definir tipos urbanos ideales en la población actual del centro de la ciudad, de los cuales se identificaron cinco categorías: gentrie pionero, gentrie sucesor, transitorio urbano, decadente y precario. Cada una de estas categorías representa una construcción mental que permite comprender los fenómenos de cambio socioespacial que afectan las áreas centrales. La tipología así definida resultó del cruce de variables claves, como la trayectoria residencial y socioprofesional, el nivel de ocupación, tipos de inmuebles habitados, y el sentido de sus prácticas espaciales.
