Lesson Study: An Approach to Increase the Competency of Out-of-Field Mathematics Teacher in Building the Students Conceptual Understanding in Learning Mathematics

Abstract: The study was conducted to observe the effectiveness of Lesson Study as an approach used to increase the skills of an out-of-field Mathematics teacher or ‘non-optional’ teacher, in building the conceptual understanding among students during the teaching and learning process. This qualitative case study was conducted using a Lesson Study approach involving a novice Mathematics teacher who is also a non-optional teacher, in a district of Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. An expert in Mathematics, School Impro… Show more

“…Assessment of student learning outcomes to find out how far students have achieved learning goals is what is referred to as learning achievement. As said by Amirullah et al, (2018) that the learning process experienced by students produces changes in the fields of knowledge and understanding, in the areas of values, attitudes and skills. The existence of these changes can be seen in the learning achievements generated by students of questions, problems or assignments given by the teacher.…”

“…Efforts that need to be made by teachers to improve students' mathematical thinking ability are to improve the effectiveness of mathematics learning. An effective teacher is a teacher who uses various methods in accordance with the culture of learning and the level of students to ensure that students achieve conceptual understanding and also learning objectives (Amirullah, 2018). Teachers must have the ability to innovate in learning that can motivate students to learn more actively, creatively and systematically in solving problems (Ginanjar et al, 2019).…”
