This research was motivated by the still limited learning of mathematics as a means of supporting learning in the 2013 Curriculum. The purpose of this study was to produce some products in the form of learning devices (syllabus, RPP and LKPD) on the material for the flat side building of VIII Middle School with discovery learning models that meet valid, practical, and effective criteria for improving students mathematical critical thinking skills. Learning tools are developed using the 4-D model, which are define, design, develop and assess. The research instrument used was an instrument of validity in the form of a validation sheet to assess the feasibility of the syllabus, RPP and LKPD as well as a practical instrument in the form of a teacher observation sheet activity in applying the discovery learning model and student questionnaire responses to assess the practicality of LKPD. The results of the validation of the experts stated that the product developed reached a valid category with an average rating of 76.67% for syllabus, 76.67% for RPP and 88.04% for LKPD. Learning devices are considered very practical in small group trials with an average response of 96.44% students and large group trials from the observation sheet of teacher activity 93.71% and the average response of students 87.77%. The learning tools have been proved to improve students mathematical critical thinking skills in terms of an average N-gain of 0.53 in the medium category.
The ability to think mathematically in solving problems is an important goal of schooling. It is an ultimate goal of teaching that students will be able to condut a mathematical investigation by themselves and that they will be able to identify where the mathematics they have learned is applicable in real-world situations. The first strategy of mathematical thinking is specializing. Specializing means turning to some examples to learn more about the main goal of a concept or problem and these examples are specific and particular instances of more a general situation in a concept or problem. This study based on students’ difficulties to think mathematically in mathematics problem solving. There are still many students who feel confused when solving problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate the specializing of two sixth grade students in solving mathematics problems. They were selected from ten students taking mathematical skills and problem solving tests. They were classified in high and low mathematics abilities. Then they were interviewed based on their work of the given task. When solving the problem, the subject with high mathematics ability was able to describe the known, the way to determine the solution and try to look at the other examples. While the subject with low mathematics ability knows about a concept that can be used to help the problems but she didn’t know the way to determine the solution. Even though taking more time, by applying both a structured-scaffolding and using specializing systematically that fit the problem they succeeded in solving tem. These results may contribute mathematics teachers in a way how to help students use specializing in solving problem.
The purpose of this descriptive qualitative research was to provide a description of the mathematical critical thinking skills of MTs students in solving mathematical problems, more precisely in the context of a flat side room shape. The research subjects were selected based on the UTS Math score. Subjects who were Grade VIII students of the Riau Technology Islamic Boarding School were grouped into high, medium, and low mathematical abilities. From each group, one student who has good communication skills is chosen as the research subject. After giving tests and interviews to the three subjects, the results obtained showed that the average test for each indicator of mathematical critical thinking skills at the inference stage reached 96.83, the analysis stage reached 88.33, the evaluation stage reached 79.33 and the inference stage reached 59.83. Each subject has different critical thinking skills according to the indicators of mathematical critical thinking skills
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
