Leptospira idonii sp. nov., isolated from environmental water

Abstract: Strain Eri-1T was isolated from a water sample on the campus of Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan. The motility and morphology of the isolate were similar to those of members of the genus Leptospira , but the spiral structure of the isolate was sharper under dark-field microscopy. Cells were 10.6±1.3 µm long and 0.2 µm in diameter, with a wavelength of 0.9 µm and an amplitude of 0.4 µm. Strain Eri-1T grew in Korthof’s medium… Show more

“…is based on the expression of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) antigens and has been used to define more than 300 serovars (1). The DNA-DNA hybridization data have been used to classify the genus Leptospira into 21 genomospecies, including saprophytic, intermediate, and pathogenic species (1,7,9,10).…”

“…Pathogenic Leptospira spp. classified into 28 serogroups and over 300 serovars based on LPS antigen (Saito et al, 2013).While the genetic homology in DNA hybridization have been identified 20 species of Leptospira spp. which includes 9 pathogenic, 5 Intermediate and 6 saprophytic species (Smythe et al, 2013).…”

“…Aside from the animal host reservoir, the environment also serves as an important reservoir for pathogenic Leptospira [2]. Despite the important role of the environment in the transmission of Leptospira in human population, there are only few published studies on the prevalent Leptospira species present in the soil and water in the Philippines [4,5]. There was only one study on the isolation of leptospires from soils and water in the provinces of Central Luzon which was done in the province of Nueva Ecija.…”
