The present study offers a unique comparison of workplace stressors and negative psychosocial outcomes for police officers with and without community conflict directed toward their departments, using identical measures for each sample. Participants included 233 Turkish officers from Istanbul who were presently receiving community conflict targeting their department and 207 officers from the northeastern United States who were not experiencing such community conflict. The two samples differed in age, years of police service and household size, so these variables were used as covariates in ANCOVAs that compared the two samples for four police stressors (Critical Incidents, Departmental Politics, Daily Hassles, Work-Home Conflict) and three negative psychosocial outcomes (police partner conflict, romantic partner conflict, poor self-esteem). Results revealed that the Turkish officers reported less intense stressors from Critical Incidents than did the USA officers, perhaps because the atypical stressor of community conflict directed at their department reduced concerns about more typical Critical Incidents of police work (burglaries, car accidents, barricaded suspects). The impact of this community conflict may have also been evident in the increased Work-Home Conflict, increased police partner conflict and worse self-esteem reported by the Turkish police in comparison to the USA police. A limitation of the present study is that broader cultural differences between the Turkish and USA police samples could have explained differences in their stressors and negative outcomes. Future research could compare departments with and without community conflict, but matched for nationality, size and resources. Future research could also examine whether officer concerns associated with community conflict lead to reduced job performance and decisions to leave the police force.

Цель: изучение стресса в работе сотрудников правоохранительных органов в условиях меняющейся социальнополи тической обстановки. Методы: диалектический подход к познанию социальных явлений, позволяющий проанализировать их в историческом развитии и функционировании в контексте совокупности объективных и субъективных факторов, который определил выбор следующих методов исследования: формально-логический, сравнительно-правовой, социологический. Результаты: по результатам опроса представителей 110 отделов правоохранительных органов представлена динамика факторов профессионального стресса за последние годы. Самыми частотными факторами названы повседневные действия по охране правопорядка, которые представляют потенциальную опасность для полицейских, административная нагрузка и посменная работа, связанные с работой проблемы семейных и межличностных отношений, а также негативное отношение общества к полиции и его отражение в средствах массовой информации. По словам респондентов, полицейские испытывают все больше страха и стресса из-за изменений социально-политической обстановки, которая характеризуется напряженными отношениями между общественностью и полицией, непрерывным информационным потоком и повсеместным распространением персональных устройств для создания видеозаписей и распространения их в Сети. Научная новизна: впервые представлен анализ влияния стресса в работе сотрудников правоохранительных органов в условиях меняющейся социально-политической обстановки. Среди положительных факторов, меняющих стрессовую обстановку к лучшему, выявлены три новых аспекта изменений стресса: 1) текущая социополитическая обстановка; 2) поколенческие сдвиги среди сотрудников правоохранительных органов; 3) предпринятые усилия по дестигматизации медицинской помощи в области психического здоровья. Практическая значимость: основные положения и выводы статьи могут быть использованы в научной, педагогической и правоприменительной деятельности при рассмотрении и изучении вопросов, связанных со стрессом в работе сотрудников правоохранительных органов в условиях меняющейся социально-политической обстановки. Assessing the organizational response to vicarious trauma in first responder and victim assistance agencies

Vicarious trauma occurs when one is exposed to the traumatic experiences of another. This exposure is particularly prevalent among first responderslaw enforcement, firefighters, emergency medical services and victim assistance providerswhere the lines between vicarious trauma and direct trauma are thin. This review collects and synthesizes current information about the impacts of vicarious trauma and the methods to address it. Vicarious trauma can lead to severe individual consequences, including increased risk for PTSD, depression, substance use, cardiovascular disease, suicidal ideation and metabolic disease. These consequences radiate outward through the systems of the ecological model (Bronfenbrenner, 1992), affecting a first responder's friends and family, the employing organization or agency, and even the entire industry. The reverse is true as wellorganizational factors, including workload, work climate, and supervision, as well as individual factors such as coping style or history of traumatic experiences can influence the reaction to vicarious trauma within the first responder. Several methods have been explored to mitigate the impact of vicarious trauma. Self-care is effective, but it unfairly shifts the burden onto the individual affected. Other individual treatments, while potentially effective, may be difficult to access due to issues of stigma. Organizational strategies, such as Critical Incident Stress Management, should be combined with adaptations of existing policies and procedures to produce vicarious trauma informed organizations.
