Length-weight relationship and condition factor of cichlid, Sarotherodon galilaeus, in the freshwater ecotype of Ogun estuary, Ogun State, Nigeria

Abstract: The effect of palm oil-supplemented diet on plasma lipid profile of Wistar albino rats was investigated by feeding the experimental animals with 20% palm oil-supplemented diets for 12 weeks. The plasma levels of Total cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), Low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and High-density lipoprotein (HDL) were determined at 4-, 8-, and 12-week intervals. The results showed significant (p<0.05) increases in TC (from 2.44+0.44 to 3.41+0.41), TG (from 1.72+0.51 to 2.46+0.19), and LDL (from 0.87+0.2… Show more

“…Log W = Log a+ b*Log L Where Log W = Log of weight of the fish LogL = log of length of the fish Loga = y-intercept b = slope After logarithmic transformation of this relation (Log a + b Log L), parameters 'a' and 'b' was determined via least squares linear regression according to Zar (2010). The value of 'b' gives information on the kind of growth of fish: The growth is isometric if b=3 and the growth is allometric if b≠3 (negative allometric if b<3 and positive allometric if b>3) as described by Le Cren (Abdul et al, 2010).…”

“…LWRs which is also referred to as growth index, is a vital tool in estimating length and weight at a known period of time (Abowei and Hart, 2009;Muchlisin et al, 2017). The flexibility of length-weight data makes many fish biologist convert growth in length equations to growth-in-weight in stock assessment model (Morato et al, 2001;Muchlisin et al, 2010;Abdul et al, 2010;Egbal et al, 2011). Condition factor (k) is the degree of wellbeing, health status, growth and feeding intensity of fish in their habitat (Nash et al, 2006).…”
