Lectin from Crataeva tapia bark exerts antitumor, anti-inflammtory and analgesic activities

Abstract: Abstract:Crataeva tapia bark lectin was evaluated for its antitumor activity against sarcoma 180 in Swiss albino mice. The antiinflammatory and analgesic properties were investigated in models of inflammation and nociception. The anti-inflammatory assay was induced by carrageenan induced peritonitis and the analgesic activity was induced by acetic acid-induced writhing response. The lectin presents low toxicity with a LD 50 of 2,500 mg/kg body weight and significant antitumor activity causing inhibition of tum… Show more

“…A number of its biological properties have been characterized, including delay in clot formation by impairing the intrinsic pathway of coagulation cascade [18]. In addition, CrataBL was shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory, analgesic [19], insecticidal [17], and anti-tumor [19] activities.…”

“…Lectins are carbohydrate binding proteins, of nonimmunogenic origin, that bind specifically and reversibly to different types of carbohydrates or glycoproteins and can be obtained from several sources, mainly from vegetal [ 3 ]. Several plant lectins have been demonstrated to possess a variety of biological activities including antitumor [ 4 6 ], anti-inflammatory [ 7 , 8 ], antimicrobial [ 9 11 ], analgesic [ 4 ], antioxidant [ 3 ] insecticidal [ 2 , 12 14 ], anticoagulant [ 15 ], and hypoglycemic [ 16 , 17 ].…”
