Lean Design Management in a Major Infrastructure Project in UK

Abstract: Lean Design Management (LDM) is a response from the lean construction community to overcome the chaotic design process in the AEC industry. Many tools, processes and methods were adapted to the context of design with limited success. This paper presents the use and adaptation of different lean design tools and processes in two phases of a major infrastructure project in the UK. The lean design implementation occurred in a Joint-Venture (JV) that had been awarded contracts to deliver civil engineering and const… Show more

“…G, H, I) often with marks above the diagonal and called blocks should be concurrently executed. DSM helps to manage domain related information flow problems leading to reduced wastes and improved quality in design (Mota et al 2019). Nonetheless, DSM lacks production control mechanisms and therefore have been combined with other lean tools such as Last Planner System (Koskela et al 1997).…”

“…(Brandalise et al 2018) used VM for Kanban combined with a performance board, where Farzad and Cameron (2019) used it for deliverable matrixes. Wesz et al (2018) presented a complete project VM adaption of Last Planner System (LPS) (Ballard 2000), and Mota et al (2019) instead defined the VM as part of the collaborative planning alone. Jabbari et al (2020);Singh et al (2020), on the other hand, presented digital solutions for organizing Takt zones according to work density without practical application.…”

“…In particular two tools were included as part of the design stage: value stream mapping and set based design. Moreover, Mota et al (2019) pointed out that there are limitations in major infrastructure projects when implementing lean design management such as: lack of collaboration, insufficient knowledge and rigidity of the organization.…”
