Leaf stomatal and epidermal cell development: identification of putative quantitative trait loci in relation to elevated carbon dioxide concentration in poplar

Abstract: Genetic variation in stomatal initiation and density, and epidermal cell size and number were examined in a hybrid pedigree of Populus trichocarpa T. & G. and P. deltoides Marsh in both ambient ([aCO2]) and elevated ([eCO2]) concentrations of CO2. We aimed to link anatomical traits with the underlying genetic map of F2 Family 331, composed of 350 markers across 19 linkage groups. Leaf stomatal and epidermal cell traits showed pronounced differences between the original parents. We considered the following trai… Show more

“…Given the increasing resolution of the genetic basis for these traits in model species (e.g. Ferris et al, 2002;Delgado et al, 2011), these traits can be made specific targets for breeding for higher g max and thereby for productivity. Other traits would also need to be targeted (e.g.…”

“…Since we observed a higher number of proliferating cell patches on the abaxial leaf side where more stomates are formed (Ferris et al, 2002), we asked if the overproliferating cells originated from meristemoid mother cells (MMCs) that give rise to the stomate cell lineage. To address this question, we crossed RBRi plants with the ProTOO-MANY-MOUTHS (ProTMM):TMM-GFP (green fluorescent protein) reporter construct, which is expressed throughout the stomata lineage.…”

“…51 AGL16 is a member of the MADS box protein family, which mRNA is targeted for sequence-specific degradation by the microRNA miR824. Additionally several potential quantitative trait loci have been also identified in poplar 52,53 and thus it seems reasonable to assume that leaf traits may be robust enough to be developed as markers for accelerated breeding programs, offering another research approach to increase crop yield.…”
