Rhododendron ferrugineum occurs in the mountains of the Central Europe with large disjunction in geographic range between Pyrenees and Alps and between Alps and Sudetes. We expect that these discontinuities in the species occurrence should involved their phenotypic differentiation, similar as described on the studies of molecular markers. The aim of the study was verification of phenotypic differences between the species populations from the Pyrenees, Alps and Sudetes. We examined characters of leaves and capsules from 13 populations, each represented by 25–30 individuals, using ANOVA, discrimination analysis, principal components analysis and agglomeration on the closest Euclidean distances. Every from examined characters of leaves and capsules except of apex angle of a capsule valve and capsule valve shape differentiated between populations at P≤0.001. Despite, range of character variation differentiating even at the highest level overlapped between populations. The analysis of discrimination, principal component analysis and agglomeration gave similar results indicating differences between populations from Pyrenees, Alps and Sudetes. However, the differences between individuals did not allow distinguish regions. The morphological characteristics of the leaves and capsules allowed to distinguish among populations of R. ferrugineum from the Pyrenees, Alps and Sudetes, and the pattern of their phenotypic differentiation was similar to that described based on genetic markers. The relict population from the Sudetes is phenotypically more similar to the populations from the Pyrenees and the Western Alps than to the spatially closest populations from the Eastern Alps.

The plants belonging to the genus Rhododendron L. and isolated compounds demonstrate diverse biological activities including anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-microbial, anti-diabetic, insecticidal and cytotoxic activity, as well as antibacterial activity. Our study was designed the effects of Rhododendron myrtifolium Schott & Kotschy leaf extract against bacterial strains were monitored in vitro by the disk diffusion method. The aim of this study was to assess possible antibacterial effects of an ethanolic extract derived from Rhododendron myrtifolium leaves against Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli strain locally isolated from human biological fluids. Thus, the study contributes to on-going investigations on the bioactivity potential of plant species such as the Rhododendron. Leaves of Rhododendron myrtifolium were harvested on the side of the road between the Menchul valley and Rogneska valley (Kvasy village, Rakhiv district, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine). The results revealed that extract exerts antibacterial activity against Citrobacter freundii. However, the Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli were resistant to R. myrtifolium leaf extract. Maximum in vitro inhibition was scored against Citrobacter freundii, followed by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter cloacae, which presented inhibition zones of (12.1 ±0.9) mm, (9.1 ±0.5) mm, (7.5 ±0.6) mm, and (7.2 ±0.5) mm, respectively. In the case of the positive controls, 96% ethanol possesses a mild antibacterial effect, which presented inhibition zones of (6.5 ±0.7) mm. The results from the screening study performed by the disc diffusion method revealed that R. myrtifolium possesses a mild antibacterial activity against C. freundii. However, further investigation is needed to determine the bioavailability of the active compounds and to determine the dose and toxicity before it can be used as therapeutic agents.

Rhododendron luteum Sweet of the Heath family Ericaceae is found on the territory of Ukraine both in the wild and is widely cultivated in botanical gardens, parks, squares. Leaves and inflorescences are used to treat heart disease, rheumatism, gout, and disorders of the nervous system. The literature data on the chemical composition relate to the presence of aminoacids, organic acids, essential oils, phenolic and triterpene compounds, andromedol derivatives. The aim of the work was to determine the composition and content of fatty and organic acids in the Rhododendron luteum Sweet leaves by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The object of the study was the leaves of Rhododendron luteum Sweet, collected on the territory of the botanical garden of H. S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University in 2019. Gas chromatography - mass spectrometric study of the component composition and content of fatty and organic acids in the leaves of the studied plant on an Agilent Technologies 6890 chromatograph with a 5973 mass spectrometric detector was carried out. In Rhododendron luteum Sweet leaves 37 substances were found and identified. Fatty acids were represented by 17 compounds. Among saturated fatty acids, palmitic acid (3 276.2 mg/kg) was prevailed, among monounsaturated – oleic (736.78 mg/kg), among polyunsaturated – linolenic (1 617.65 mg/kg). The smallest amounts contained heneukocylic (46.33 mg/kg), lauric (58.17 mg/kg) and caproic (68.17 mg/kg) acids, which belong to saturated fatty acids. The presence of 20 organic acids in the raw material was also established: citric (8 680.30 mg/kg) and iso-citric (4 106.85 mg/kg) acids dominated in terms of quantitative content; oxalic (1 685.65 mg/kg) and malic (1 310.82 mg/kg) acids were contained in significant amounts. Among the derivatives of hydroxybenzoic acid, the greatest amount was presented by gentisic (187.76 mg/kg) acid, among the derivatives of hydroxycinnamic acids – p-coumaric (312.62 mg/kg). For the first time, the qualitative composition and quantitative content of fatty and organic acids in Rhododendron luteum Sweet leaves was studied by gas chromatography with a mass spectrometric detector. The obtained results indicate the prospects for further study of raw materials to develop drugs with membrane stabilizing and anti-inflammatory activity.
