Abstract: A piezoelectric piezoelectric-metal-cavity (PMC) actuator was reported previously that can exhibit a large flexural displacement. In this paper, a lead-free piezoelectric ceramic was used as a driving element of the PMC actuator. Bi(0.5)(Na(0.725)K(0.175)Li(0.1))(0.5)TiO3 (abbreviated as BNKLT) is a soft-type piezoelectric ceramic with good piezoelectric properties at room temperature. This paper presents the design, fabrication and characterization of single-element ultrahigh frequency (UHF) ultrasonic transducers in which the center frequency ranged from 170 to 320 MHz. The center frequency of > 300 MHz is the highest value of lead-free ceramic ultrasonic transducers ever reported. With concern in the environmental pollution of lead-based materials, the transducer elements presented in this work were lead-free K0.5Na0.5NbO3/Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (KNN/BNT) composite thick films. All transducers were evaluated in a pulse-echo arrangement. The measured −6 dB bandwidth of the transducers ranged from 35 to 64 %. With the optimized piezoelectric properties of the composite film, the insertion loss of the UHF transducers was measured and determined to range from −50 to −60 dB. In addition to the pulse-echo measurement, a 6-μm tungsten wire phantom was also imaged with a 205 MHz transducer to demonstrate the imaging capability. The measured −6 dB axial and lateral resolutions were found to be 12 μm and 50 μm, respectively. The transducer performance presented in this work is shown to be better or comparable to previously reported results even though the frequency is much higher.

In order to decrease the backward motion and improve the motion efficiency, a walking type piezoelectric actuator has been proposed with two ‘legs’ based on the parasitic motion of obliquely assembled PZT stacks. The structure and motion principle of the proposed walking type piezoelectric actuator are described, and its experiment system is set up. Experimental results indicate the proposed piezoelectric actuator could reduce the backward motion effectively. The minimum backward rate α= 2.26% is achieved under the condition of the phase difference θ= 180°, the input voltage U= 120 V and the input frequency f= 1 Hz; the minimum stepping displacement is 0.24 μm under the condition of U= 5 V, f= 1 Hz and θ= 180°; the maximum speed V max is 2472 μm s−1 under the condition of U =120 V and θ= 180°; the maximum vertical load force F Vmax = 6850 g under the condition of U = 120 V, f = 1 Hz and θ = 180°. Furthermore, a dynamic model of the whole walking type piezoelectric actuator is established, and it has been employed to simulate the motion of the proposed walking type piezoelectric actuator. Simulation results present a great agreement of experimental results. This study shows a novel idea for the design of piezoelectric actuators to eliminate the influence of backward motion and improve the output efficiency of the actuator.

High-frequency (25 MHz) ultrasonic transducers with Na(0.5)Bi(0.5)TiO(3)-BaTiO(3) (NBT-BT) lead-free piezoelectric single crystal as the active elements are fabricated and characterized. The impedance measurement reveals that the poled [001]-oriented NBT-BT single crystal exhibits a high thickness electromechanical coefficient k(t) of 0.52 and a low clamped dielectric constant of 80. The -6-dB bandwidth of the transducer is 46.16% and the insertion loss at the center frequency is -31.89 dB. The good performance of the transducer indicates that the NBT-BT single crystal would be a promising lead-free material for ultrasonic transducer applications.
